Hi. I'm newly diagnosed and just getting to grips with finding out about what food does what to my Blood Glucose.

After a good pre prandial reading of 6.7, I had 4 tiny wholewheat crisproll things ( the really dry, really crisp little dried up rolls - not white) with a fairish scraping of taramasalata on each. 2 hrs later - 9.4. The highest post prandial I have had for 3 days. The crisp rolls I've had before with no rise. I threw the taramasalata label away. Does anyone know what's in it - apart from fish, and if this could be the reason??? I did no exercise after eating .... I'd just come in from work.

I'm a bit dejected as I'd been doing quite well.

Thanks in advance

Thank you!!! Didn't know this existed.

yes - I reckon, according to this, that it was the taramasalata. "Relatively high in carbs for those following low carb diet".

Thanks for replying. That's another thing I can check off the list ...................

Cheers

to be honest I think it's more likely it was the crispbreads that did the damage If they're the ones I think you mean (Swedish something or other) I recall they're about 9g of carb each. 50g of taramasalata is quite a lot.

Hi !

Yes, I think you're right. The crisp rolls aren't too great. What I think I did, even though I only had 4 was overindulge. I forgot that those days are over. Thanks for your help and advice. I'm new to this.

Customer helplines that use recorded menus that promise to put me through to the right person but never do - and being ill. Oh, and did I mention customer helplines :)
Hi Cathy, taramosalata is traditionally made from taroma which is fish roe from the carp although cod roe is also often used nowadays, this is then mixed with garlic, onion and lemon juice so not much there that would raise your bg levels.

BUT...theres always a but isnt there?

Bread crumbs, milk and cream are sometimes added so with a shop bought product, as always it is best to read the label. That said it would need a lot of breadcrumbs to raise your bg levels so my hunch would be to blame something else possibly the crisp bread or even an undiscovered bug you may have been harbouring at the time of testing. I would try it again and if you get the same result try it on its own without the crispbread, pretty soon you will track down the culprit

Hi Cathy,

Tesco seem a bit obsessed to me with putting carbs in as many products as they can, so I would say it's the taramasalata - white bread is a cheap bulking agent.

As to crisp breads these ones are great; about 3 carbs per piece, they are pretty crunchy so watch your false teeth ( )

If that link is removed because it's advertising google GG Scandinavian Crisp Bread.

Thanks all, for the suggestions and advice. I am just beginning to get a fragile grip here! I am diet controlled at the moment Type 2 and I want to stay diet controlled - but , wow - my brain is starting to fry a bit with low carbs, glycaemic load, glycaemic index etc. I can't take it all in. Tell me it gets easier. x

I just realised that that site I posted a link to is a US site - you can get the crisp breads from the low carb mega store (google it) and they are about £1.20 for 10. Well worth it if you miss a bit of a crunch!

Cheers - I do indeed miss a bit of crunch. I did notice that it was a US site - now I know I can get them here, I'll give them a go.
