Baffled!

I'm on a pump. morning carb ratio and basal rates have remain unchanged for the last few months. Here is my issue.

Tues 7.42am reading was 6.9. I had weetabix and raisins for breakfast. Measured the carbs - 40g (2 weetabix and 14g raisins) and took a bolus of 5 units. At 9.42am reading was 6.8. Happy days.

Today 7.34am reading was 6.0. Had the exact same breakfast. Gave the exact same bolus. 9.15am reading was 2.7!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Can anyone throw some light on this? I am well and truly baffled.

@hynes48 I find that I have a minimum and maximum BS when I get up. That is, the BS just slightly below normal will mean I can go lower after breakfast than you'd expect, and a slightly higher BS will work the opposite way.

It sounds daft but I kept records and it is what's happening. So, I simply adjust my bolus slightly.

That, or it's just one of those great random things Type 1 throws at us!

Thanks @azure. Just so i fully understand. Are you saying if you reading is say 5.0 in the morning then your normal bolus ratio would push you lower than expected while if the reading was say 9.0 the normal bolus ratio(plus correction) would not bring you back to a normal reading after a couple of hours?

Morning @hynes48 :)

I'm a pump user too - I try to eat pretty much the same thing most days to = the same result. I normally have a small portion of porridge with just milk, so 30g of carb, some days I can easily get back in range after 2-3 hours, other days i'll go high so 12/13, however it's dependent on a number of factors, exercise, stress, illness, hormones, BG before food etc.. so if i'm rushing about in the morning I can either hit my range or sometimes I can go low too. I never get the same result every day despite being boring and repeating everything :banghead: My suggestion is just to keep an eye on it and just keep testing and if you see a repeat then adjust under your DSN's guidance ;)

Yes. I have a normal morning blood sugar (not just a single number, a normal range) and if I'm below that my normal breakfast bolus will make me noticeably lower at the two hour mark. It also happens if I'm a little high, but then my BS goes slightly higher than normal at two hours. For me, the effect is most noticeable when I'm lower than normal.

As azure says, it's maybe just the essential randomness and variabilty of T1. There's a lot of things going on in the background we can neither measure nor control. For example, maybe your liver decided to "take back" some glucose. Stephen Ponder's book Sugar Surfing emphasises the random nature and the little tweaks and nudges he uses aided by cgm to deal with it whether on pump or mdi.

Thanks Lads. This is what i really like about the forum. Prior to joining i would have been left scratching my head. It's great to be able to post up an issue knowing someone has probably come across it before. Thanks again.

Quick update. BG was 5.6 this morning. Same breakfast as previuos 2 mornings. Adjusted my bolus ratio. BG as I type is 5.8.
@azure, you're a star!:).
The only downside is i can't have a mars bar with my coffe this morning!:(
