Hello I have a blood sugar reading question for you boffins :)

A friend (genuinely a friend not secretly me!) tested their blood sugar out of curiousity -on a completely empty stomach just before a meal it was 8.1 , one and a half hrs later after the carbiest of all carb meals (steak with chips , baked beans, slices of white fluffy bread, ice cream) it was 6.7 . Then two hrs later with no more food 6.9.

What goes on there ? Just a freaky unexplained spike???

Hi @VioletViolet It could have been a dodgy test strip or 'dirty' finger.

If your friend has concerns, the best thing to do would be to visit their doctor for a proper, accurate test :)

Ha , how dare you say my friends have dirty fingers?? ;) Not any real concern more like curiousity of baffling blood sugar mechanism and a bit of why can't mine lower after bread and chips envy :(

The best explanation is the first test was a rogue one - either a contaminated strip or a contaminated finger. If not, if it was a true reading she needs to visit the doctor! 8.7 on an empty tummy before a meal is a diabetic reading.

@VioletViolet - Whilst she hadn't eaten anything, had she had a soft drink a short while before testing?

There is a school of thought that sugar substitutes can produce a rogue spike and then the body realises that it had not glucose and reverts quickly to normal not sure if there is a lot of research on this or just an apocryphal story . As others said could be a rogue test. Maybe if your friend is worried she could test without having anything to eat or drink other than water.

They were sugar free bog as in bog standard decaf. instant with a splash of semi skimmed milk. There was a LOT of stress yesterday could that be a factor?

Anything can raise blood sugar in non diabetics as well as those with diabetes Most non diabetics would never know how their blood levels can go up and down because they have no reason to test it

I completely agree with this as I have randomly tested Mr Chook (I just like him to know that BG testing isn't painless) and I also used to occasionally test my co-workers for the same reason. I actually found two diabetics that way who had no idea.
