bar of chocolate?

The last two nights I have had hypos at 3am and 5am. I try to eat properly and have good evening meals. As such I sometimes struggle to eat a decent supper and go to bed with just a cuppa. Should I cut back on my evening meal and have a bigger supper or could I eat a chocolate bar to see me through the night?

Are you on insulin @lynbrown ?

Can you think of any obvious reason for the hypos of the last two nights? Eg eating less than normal, miscalculating your carbs, taking exercise?

Perhaps, if you are type 2 and injecting insulin or taking some oral drug that can cause hypos, instead of eating more maybe talk with your doctor about reducing your medicine? Forcing yourself to eat more, because the meds are too strong doesn't make sense. That will cause higher insulin resistance, weight gain, increase chances for cardiovascular diseases, and progress type 2 diabetes.

Keeping a detailed journal of blood glucose tests, injections, medicines & the carb count for each meal, would be highly beneficial; you could share this journal with your doctor to adjust medicines appropriately. See link:

Once I started eating a diet appropriate for my particular metabolic needs, I dropped my 120 units of insulin per day, along with all my oral meds... and blood sugars have finally normalized, lost 3 stone, and have half of the feeling back in my limbs (all within 2 months of eating an appropriate diet.. which for me was about 20-40 net grams of carbs per day, high in fat diet) (Your mileage may vary -- we each have our own unique metabolic fingerprint and carbohydrate thresholds.)

I recommend a good book: Jenny Ruhl's Blood Sugar 101 -- most of the info can be had for free though from her site: http://bloodsugar101.com
