I have just noticed on another thread that Diabetics are not supposed to go barefoot.

I didnt know this. My HCP's didnt mention this. But the nurse has given me some Hydromol to soften my heels.

I am wondering if I should google every part of my body+diabetes just to make sure I havent missed anything else.

The reason is that many diabetics have neuropathy, so don't feel an injury and poor circulation with high blood sugar prevents normal healing, thus you risk getting seriously infected wounds. I keep my BG LOW and often go barefoot. I discovered when I fell off my bike last year that I heal perfectly normally and just as fast as anyone. Yet another point for HFLC diet

You were very lucky Hana, I dont like to take risks when I dont have to but I would add Crocs to barefoot as a couple of years ago I mowed our lawn wearing a pair and a large thorn went straight through into the bottom of my foot, It didnt get infected but I did clean it well and look after it just in case. You only get one pair of feet.

On ******!!!!!

Going around barefoot indoors and in the grass is one of my preferred summertime occupations :(

One of my "foibles" - I hate going barefoot, hate the feel of talc on my feet, hate anyone (including hubby) touching my feet. Just thinking about my next visit to the nurse sends shivers down the spine.

I was told about me feet, but I've always gone barefoot... But with saying that I've never had any problems with my feet not even hard skin or athletes foot etc... Then thing I can't abide when they do the foot check, is the the sound fork test I can feel the vibration right up through my shin bones

But if you want diabetic over kill, try a minor dog bite and a broken finger! (hazard of my job, dog handler)

Working with one on of the dogs, training the fetch, the dog went to catch the ball has I throw it, missed the ball but caught side of my hand, leaving a small wound where his fang punctured my skin.. I only went down to our Small Injury Unit because my boss didn't stop badgering me to go... Now I actually don't like hospitals, so phoned my youngest daughter to meet me there!

I ended up with the nurse prodding and poking ensuring she fulling cleaned the wound with sterile water, I thought when the nurse soaked a dressing with iodine, that he'd secure it with a normal micropore dressing, oh no, well yes he did secure it with the micropore dressing, but to ensure pressure was on it to push the iodine into wound, my hand and forearm strapped up! And it got worse he decided I had to have a tetanus Jab, I protested explained I didn't like injections... He laughed said 'she who injects herself' then realised I was going very pale and slipping down the chair  And I'm sure the tetanus jab kicked off my frozen shoulder, due to I reacted badly to the tetanus and straight into a frozen shoulder!

Broken finger, I was tossed over 4ft in the air by a collie, she'd collided with my legs at full pelt flicking me up, I ended up bruising to front of legs, hips and arm on the side I hit the deck, and 1 broken finger, a small fracture near the middle knuckle of the finger, Ended up twoing and throwing from fracture clinic for 8 weeks, constantly having it checked purely because I was T1, if I hadn't been it would have been strapped and told that I could take it off after a couple of weeks!

That sounds nasty Jopar, a friend of mine has a border terrier and it was attacked by another dog he waded in to separate them and got bitten by his dog, it took the tip off his fore finger and broke the bone in it, he had to have an 2 hour operation at east grinstead hospital to repair it, amazing how strong a terriers jaws are isnt it.

X-Ray pic off my friends facewipe page, I only laughed a little, honest :lolno:

After my foot check, nurse said they were 100% ok, she advised that it would be advisable to wear something, but as I had no problems and a great circulation she was not worried at the moment for me to wear anything, just be careful
