Basal Insulin Problem

Hi DunePlodder,

Yes I have had the Freestyle Libre system for 3 months now and, yes it is expensive but it has definately made me more aware.

What is the Dexcom please? Is that the same sort of thing?
It's similar, but you don't have to scan the sensor as you do with the Feestyle Libre. Instead it continuously transmits data to the receiver. The main advantage is that you can have alarms if you are about to go low - this was my reason for buying it, I'd had a series of very unpleasant overnight hypos.
Take a look at http://www.dexcom.com/en-GB/node/7461
Much more expensive than the Libre to set up. For me running costs are similar but only because I get around 3 weeks out of each sensor. They are only warranted for 1 week though.

Levemir is hugely better for me. Enables a bit more flexibility to play around with doses. Make sure you get a new pen (the vials don't fit the lantus pen) and get 0.5 pens for more accurate doses if needed.
I've dropped over night even more now though. Went to bed at 9.2 last night. Decided not to correct at all to see how much I would drop. Still dropped to 5.8 by 6am...so from 1 jab of 6 units of levemir its dropped to 2.5 split between two doses and still too much!!
Despite a correction an hour before feet getting put on to floor from bed I still rose to 7.1 but not anywhere near your rise.

Was there breakfast anywhere inbetween your two readings? Or was it still in bed?

Levemir over two or three injections gives much better flexibility. I can now have lazy days or more active ones cos of morning shots..

Hi,
No breakfast or anything. Just got out of bed and there it was

Everyone seems so knowledgable on here and able to correct their doses etc.
I feel like I know nothing and yet I've had this for years.

Looks like you have it sorted with your Levemir doses. I will def ask about changing over and see what happens. Just had my HbA1c result and its not as good as I thought it would be either.
Never mind, one day ....

What a shame they are so expensive. It sounds like it is a good system and the alarm facility I would love.
Just no way I can afford to pay that out. Surprised the warranty period is only 3 months too.
Will just have to stick with the Freestyle Libre and crossed fingers for the nightime!
Hopefully in time the prices will come down to a more affordable level.
Thanks for being so helpful

I think you will struggle to control high BG's first thing in the morning by adjusting your long acting insulin regimen.
The solution would be an Insulin pump where a basal pattern can be set up to match your livers glucose output in the early hours of the morning.

Hey, don't be despondent... I'm too OTT, always have been in many ways.. So please don't compare knowledge, or anything. The thing is as well, is how good your nurses and consultants are as well. How good your CCG is etc. I have had some exceptional help, and I truly mean exceptional from some nurses and consultants.

And I get told off for being too low with hba1c and too caring... So I'm certainly not a good example to follow!! It hasn't got me in a better place than you, and you are probably enjoying life more than me!!! Xx

Good words spoken here.

Martin
