Basal test

And so 10pm was what then? Or are you too busy stuffing your face to care?!? Haha

Can a pump deliver 0.05u at a time? Based on my basal needs on MDI (totally different I know) I'd need between 0.08 and 0.05 units! Crazy small numbers!

I know it's not as small as that but I'm just curious to how it actually works

Re: Basal test

Last reading done 4.8 thank f for that so from 6pm to 10pm I had
4.8
4.3
4.1
4.7
4.8
I can live with that :)
so, from 12am to 11pm my hourly baal rates are
12~1am0.10
1am~3am0.15
3~4am 0.45
4~5am 0.65
5~6am 0.75
6~7am0.90
7~8am0.95
8~11am0.40
12~6pm 0.20
7~8pm0.25
9~10pm0.30
11pm~12 0.10
Totaling 8.05 basal units
Not that this can help anyone just wanted to share. Interesting to see how much my basal various through the night/day.

Sorry was a long thing to type lol.

That is a big variation, but if it's what works for you then roll with it!

I'm glad they go down low enough, it would be pointless going through all this rigmarole to get a pump to find they don't do small enough increments!

Can you apply the same accuracy to bolus or is it just the standard 0.5 unit?

I hope you've got something good to eat!!

For boluses you can do as little as 0.1 units. Still better than the 1/2 unit pens

In reality though Brett, when would you need to deliver such a small amount of insulin ? Not teying to be clever, just curious. For me, that would equate to 1/10th of a biscuit !

I dOibt many people use 0.1u at a time, but it would be nice to do say 2.7u for a meal rather than being stuck with 2.5 or 3!

Saying that though, I do love my 0.5u pen compared to my levemir 1u pen!

Re: Basal test

Off to the docs to see if he'll prescribe me a 0.5 unit pen tonight. What do you call them and do they take re-fills? Just so I know he gives me the right one!

Re: Basal test

Good results there Brett - impressed:)
I quite often deliver boluses of 3.2 or 2.8 etc - very useful I'd say.

Although Brett's bg levels on the basal rate testing are not at hypo level, they are not that far from being there and so that is why a healthy target level of 6mmol is recommended so that there is an element of forgiveness if bg levels decide to change for no obvious reason. Brett gets round the bg control by using a high amount of carb in the bolus ratio whereas others who use a fasting bg of 6mmol will use a lower amount of carb in bolus ratio and balance themselves up that way. It doesn't really pay to be too 'tight' with bg levels as soon or later, we fall off the tightrope and start to lose some degree of our awareness of going hypo which is reflected in the hba1c of 6.5% or less.

Re: Basal test

Not this low on a daily basis at all, and would definatley not run bg levels this low consistently. I suspected my basal levels were ok but was happy with these levels for the purpose of the test. After all thats the point of a basal test to test the basal profile Didn't expect any big changes to happen but nice to confirm it. Any other time would of just had a biscuit or something to get levels to 6 ish. or if active a larger snack and temp basal stop. yes I use alot more bolus than basal but thats the point of bolus to cover only what you eat, and I do eat alot, but being a 6ft 3 male and weighing only 12.5 stone I think I need to, and I Wanted to ensure my bolus wasnt making up any shortfall of my basal. At all times on any time of day would never knowingly stay in the 4s as rightly pointed out not much error of margin and also may loose hypo awareness. Also need to be five to drive. Saying that and staying between 5~8 95% of the time, a hba1c of 6.5 isn't unreasonable or dangerous is it?

Re: Basal test

Your a1c of 6.5% is only ok as long you are able to get good hypo awareness and able to recognonise the hypo feeling in good time before starting to feel really awful. Once you start to feel awful, then usually the bg test will be fairly low and that's the time to relax the control a bit and aim to be a bit higher. Once bolus insulins that have a very fast onset and short action to them become available, then bg levels will be able to be better controlled and less of the hypo feeling experienced.

I'm on Novorapid so my half unit pen is the novo pen echo!
