I could use some advice, going to a BBQ on Saturday and it's really the first one I'll have been to since I started to try and get serious again with my diabetes. I carb count and also doing a week with a CGMS so I need to write down all the stuff I eat, carbs, units etc. The thing I'm unsure about is timing of my injection. I'm quite a large eater so I'll be eating at different times in unknown quantities. So, should I do an injection for every time I eat something or a massive amount of insulin at the start?

Hi @jimmysmith Firstly I hope the weather is good for you ;)

Personally what I would do under these circumstances is to simply inject for each plate of food you are about eat, so you can see what's on your plate and total carbs then inject. If you do one big injection you may not feel like eating more or lose track of insulin taken, carbs eaten. So it's easier to inject as you go.

Have a great time :)

I usually follow @Juicyj advice - inject for each plate.

I have also tried eating to my injections: after seeing the available food, I decide approximately how many carbs I want to eat an start by injecting for that. Giving most bbq food is typically fatty, it takes some time to absorb the carbs into your good stream so this dose should last over a few hours. I find this target holds me back from overeating with the option to inject later if some yummy looking desserts appear.

I rarely eat BBQ but when I have I've come out on the high end. The BBQ sauce contains a fair amount of sweets so the meat is more carb-like. I love the stuff though!

Ended up not doing a BBQ on Saturday due to the weather, instead we went to a place called World Cuisine, basically an all you can eat buffet of all sorts of foods. Ended up doing about 5 injections, total of 38 units. Was 12. something at the start and when I got home I had only dropped by 1 so I guess my attempts at guessing and carb counting still needs refining but, overall, happy with the outcome. Thanks to everyone for the advice
