hello!

is there room for Beans, lentils and chickpeas in LCHF?

how much? how cooked?

is eventually the insulin index high or low?

thanks!

Default position is no pulses for me. But occasionally I put a tablespoon of lentils in a sauce or of kidney beans in chilli beef (both meals for two). There are explanations on the forum of the difference between pulse carbs and other carbs and you have to try them and test.

I find I need to try a bit, and test. Some people can tolerate foods other people cant.

I'm a liberal low carber at 80g carbs a day - I can eat small amounts of potato, burgen bread, veggies, but even a sniff of pulses raise my bs - it's the old adage - test and see - eat to your meter is the only way to know for sure

What about Chana Dal ? I think these pulses are relatively low carb. I say this because my daughter is vegan and with my locarbing, it is tricky to find a common ground!

I can eat up to 80 gm of carbs a day as long as I don't eat grains starchy vegetables or legumes other than a few peas or green beans. All my experience is with weight control - I did not try eating them and testing as I know that I can't eat them as a rule, and everything else which did not allow weight loss showed raising of blood glucose levels. If you have the ability to test then you could try a few and seeing how they affect you, but I would advise only small quantities.

Funny story... woke up with a very rare hypo last night at 46. Had a swipe of hummus and a few veg and woke up at 72. By a swipe I mean less than a teaspoon. I KNOW the power of hummus on my bs. It's the only carbs we have in the house. My hubby eats it, not me. I do have glucose tabs but they send me much too high. Luckily I know 1 carb raises me about 7 so I did some math and got close. I was aiming for 80.

Only when hypo will I eat legumes other than small amounts of green beans but they raise me too.

I can get away with small portions of beans and pulses - no more than a couple of tablespoons per serving. Any more than that and my readings are stratospheric.

I did experiment with a small serving of brown rice and veg fried in coconut oil - again a couple of tablespoons - and readings one hour and two hours afterwards were quite respectable.

I have pearl barley instead of rice now .. it lovely and not increasing my bs

Think I might have some pearl barley at the back of the cupboard somewhere
I find lentils and beans a bit of a lottery, sometimes \i'm ok with them other times not.
I use mashed butter beans on a sheps pie with reasonable results

I'm OK with pearl barley as a rule. I often make arancini using it and stick a big wodge of cheese in each one.

I often eat a half cup of soaked boiled chickpeas with garlic onion tomato and green veg. Then a good 40 minute walk. I go by feeling as I don't test my blood. My doctor does a complete blood and urine test every month. I'm T2.
