Like lots of people I've been concerned about the plight of the bee population, so when I found one struggling on the pavement I picked it up thinking I'd take it home and give it some sugar water, or honey. Then I remembered that for the last 18 months I hadn't had any kind of sugar in my house! Ended up knocking on a neighbour's door, bee in hand, demanding sweetness!

I used to have a little dog who would always come to tell me if he found a bee - sometimes in the house on the carpet, sometimes outside sitting minding its own business on the lawn, but in either case I was expected to do something about it or he pestered me until I did... I have no idea what originally triggered his behaviour, but he definitely believed that they were in the wrong place, and he certainly would have been very proud of you @Hedonista. :p:p

One of my really sad memories is of coming home from work years ago and finding a swarm of bees trapped in our utility room. I called a workmate who was fairly close neighbour and a bee keeper, but we were more or less too late as they most of them were either dead or dying...

I've got a bunch of them buzzing in and out of my house, a hole under the guttering has appeared and they seem to have taken up residence in my loft. After some research, I've found they are bumblebees. The council won't remove them so they can stay there until Autumn, when I believe they die off naturally.

You could try putting an ad in a local paper - some bee-keepers would like to get hold of a swarm. We tried it, but the bees decided to move on before the bee-keeper got here!

I did check that out @Pink_Minx , but it wouldn't be any good unfortunately. Bee keepers will only have an interest in honey bees, not the bumblebees we have got (can you believe I actually had to play identa-bee?:hilarious:). Beekeepers don't want them, the council doesn't want them, I don't particularly want them but as long as they stay at other side of the house, I guess we can co-exist peacefully:D

Here's the difference http://bumblebeeconservation.org/about-bees/faqs/honeybees-vs-bumblebees/

Wow - bee forensics?? Detective @ladybird64? Love it!

Yes, that makes sense - I didn't think of that. Maybe you could train them like pets..? OK, back in pot - it's too early for that level of silliness!

You can be as silly as you like @Pink_Minx, just as long as you keep well out of the honey pot.

Bumble bees are the nice fat fuzzy cuddly looking ones
(and probably would look well as pets?):p:p...
Honey bees are more streamlines and look a bit like slightly hairy chested wasps.

Come to think back on it now, my little dog was intent on me saving the wrong sort...:wideyed::(

Thanks for that, @Robbity - although you may come to regret it!

Do you remember this smiling bee from 2008?

I love that photo!

I think all bees are good, so your little dog was still on the right track! Mind you, I still wouldn't want to stroke one. A bee, not your dog. I think I need a lie-down!

Edited to add that I intend to stay well away from the honey pot. After all, honey is basically bee vomit, isn't it?
