Type of diabetes
Type 1
i got type2 diabetes in 2005 after getting acute pancretitis, i got put on glicazide a small amount, but got told to stop taking them cos my blood sugar was ok. in 2009 i got symptoms of diabetes again and i went to hospital and blood sugar was 30-high, i got put on oral tablets (metaformin) but they never worked, so got put on insulin (novamix30), and been on that since then, my blood sugar has been up and down, for a couple of years it was pretty stable, ive took 6 units in morning and 6 at dinner and i.ve been has high as 40 morning and 40 dinner, this last 6 weeks i've gone from 16 in a morning and 16 at dinner to 28 in a morning and 38 at night. i'm fed up of being tired all the time, if im not hypo, im hper, my blood are either 14-16 or 2-4. im topping insulin at dinner and supper some times. my doctor dosent seem to listen to me and i have diabetes appointment in February with the clinic. i still arent to short if im type 1 or 2 , isay im 1 cos im insulin dependent?

Hi :) Whether you use insulin or not doesn't affect what type you are. You can be Type 2 and on insulin. Type 1 diabetes is an auto immune condition, Type 2 isn't.

There are other kinds of diabetes too.

Do you count carbs?

Chris, please ring the diabetes clinic on Tues and ask for an urgent apt. Look on the web for the hospital you are going to and check out the diabetes clinic, hopefully you will find some numbers to ring including the diabetes nurses who will I hope sort you out.

Hi @chrisgovhull

Whatever type you might be? The good news is it sounds like you are testing the blood sugar levels.
What I would say is keep records of test results, insulin dosage & what you have eaten. Including any alcohol consumed to help your diabetic consultants.. Be honest with them & yourself. ;)
There are apps for phones to help with this. Saves on paper..

It helps them to help you..

Some basics on your insulin storage. Are you keeping it cool in the fridge? Insulin can go off.
Injecting. Do you rotate the injection sites? Are you certain the mechanism in the pen is in working order? (Assuming it's a pen.)
Are you performing an "air shot", thus giving the correct dose?

Sorry for the daft questions. o_O

Good luck with your doctor.

Hi and welcome. Just think of yourself as insulin dependant. It sounds like you really need to urgently go onto the Basal/Bolus insulin regime with carb counting which will give you far better control. Those blood sugar readings are bad and need to be sorted very soon.

It sounds to me that your insulin you're on which is a basal & bolus mix may not be the right one for you. It's a good idea to get an appointment as soon as you can with your diabetes specialist as you have to get your treatment sorted. As to what type of diabetes you have, they should've tested you for that by now and if they haven't ask them to do so. You should've had the GAD test to check for antibodies and the c-peptide test to check whether or not you're producing sufficient insulin yourself. I'd say based on what you've mentioned above you probably have insufficient insulin production. You could be either type 1, type 1.5, type 2, or type 3c. I think it's possible you could be type 3c as you mention you got diabetes after getting acute pancreatitis. Whatever type you have the treatment of it is based on whether or not you have your own insulin or not. So if you have to be on insulin you just need to be on the right insulin that works for you. I'm on a basal insulin called lantus, and a bolus insulin called apidra. Each insulin has a different profile and some may work better for you than others. For example I was put on protaphane basal at first and that didn't really work well for me so my endocrinologist switched me to lantus instead. It is a case of trial and error with treatment but you will work closely with your diabetes specialist to get that right. Also you don't have to be type 1 to be insulin dependant... the only difference between the types of diabetes is how the insulin is destroyed in your body. With type 1 and type 1.5 the insulin is destroyed by antibodies. With type 2 beta cell damage can occur due to stress on the pancreas to produce insulin so basically it no longer produces insulin that is required. Hopefully your medical team can help clarify what type you have and what treatment is best for you. Please make sure you let them know the novomix isn't working for you... they need to listen and trial you on different insulin. As mentioned they don't all have the same profile (my endocrinologist explained this to me and showed me a profile chart for different types of insulin when he first placed me on insulin), so it isn't a one size fits all treatment really. I wish you the best.

Hi have you spoken to anyone on foods and carb counting . You must be feeling poorly with your sugars rotating as they are . Please get advice from your local GP as soon as you can
