Hi everybody!
Just got back from the doctor's,
Firstly I am shocked I have gained 5lbs, I have not eaten any chocolate or rice or many carbs at all! I have followed a diet to the full, not lost but gained!
I was then told that even though I am hitting high 18 and 21 etc that as yet I will not be put onto medication! Apparently these are blood readings are perfectly fine and nothing to worry about same as the drops and hypo's I should not worry!
I asked about medication! Told no medication for at least 6 months so that they can see if I can control it! And this being told, that I should be able to eat a piece of bread at each meal! Hello you just said that I have gained weight! And I want to lose weight!
I must admit have come away from there today and feel so letdown! My doctor won't prescribe any medication unless the diabetes nurse says so!
What am I meant to do now? I am so confused! I am hitting the high 18 etc, average after a meal I am hitting lowest being 9 to 13.
Going to bed with it being around the 9 to 14 mark, I am worried that this is doing me harm! Every morning it is between 7.5 and 9.
I have been told not to worry as there is nothing to worry about my body is adjusting that is all! I see the diabetic nurse again next month! I have no glucose in my urine. But apparently I do have protein in my urine.
This also should not worry me! I am to keep a food diary as I have been doing for the last two weeks, as two weeks is not long enough for the diabetes nurse to go on!
I must admit I feel worn out and just don't know what to do!
Sandy

Please Sandy, will you ask for a second opinion on you condition!Get a GP to refer you to a specialist consultant such as an Endocrinologist !

Hi everybody,
How do i go about a second opion, don't want to get on my gp's nerves! As she has been helpful!
This nurse is one who works out of the endo's clinic! She comes to our doctor's! She said that it is nothing to worry about as it is not that bad! I think that this is bad!

Sandy you have to pluck up the courage to see your GP and calmly state that you are not happy with things at the moment and that you would like a referral (second opinion) to an Endocrinologist.
This person is best placed to deal with the Diabetes and your other documented problems.

It is not a reflection of your GP's competence. It is your right. If there are any other Gp's at the practice see one of them if you do not feel like using your regular one.

Ken.

Hi sandy,
sorry you are receiving such "****" treatment. How does the nurse feel that those levels are acceptable. What was your HBA1c result? and why are they going to wait 6 months to review you when you obviously need to be reviewed in 2 or 3 months?
regards,
ang.

Hi ang,
The nurse said that she will see me in four weeks, when she wants some new bloods doing etc.
But then informed me that it is usual allowing type 2 to go 6 months without medication first!
I amlucky that my blood pressure is fine and normal! My weight is a big issue! Have not got a clue what the last results were! As i just don't know what is going off!
I have tried to get a appointment with my normal gp! They are saying that she has no appointments what so ever for the next two weeks! She is the best one out of the lot of the gp's!

Get a new doctor while you are still alive!

Are there any others in the area? Ask around your friends and the pharmacy. It might even be worth turning up at Casualty with numbers like that. At best they might know someone more competent.

If your weight has gone up it suggests that you are eating too much.
With blood glucose so high it suggests that you are eating too much carbohydrate.

Being recently diagnosed I am getting similar information and without medication I don't think that you have any option but to cut out carbohydrate until you get the medication. That has been my approach.

I have recently asked for further blood tests to determine the type of my diabetes so then I can get a better feel for which medication would be best suitable and the nurse didn't like this but after putting my request to her in writing she has agreed and asked me to see the doctor not her when the results come back.

So pluck up the courage - work out which foods are best for you - then get back in there and give her hell. It is your health she is messing with.

All the best.

Sandy.

Have you tried phoning the Surgery and asking to speak to your normal GP on the phone ?
This should by-pass the 'gatekeepers' - the Receptionists. If you do not get through, then ask to speak to the Practice Manager and complain ! Do not be intimidated by this.

You need to see your GP or speak to him/her now. They can actually call you back as well.

Sandy, the treatment you are receiving is in NO way helpful.

A doctor who will not prescribe a course of treatment because it is not suggested / endorsed by the nurse is no kind of doctor I would want to be seeing.

It's time to take a deep breath, grab your self by the scruff of the neck and say "No, this is not acceptable to me, I wish to be seen by another doctor please."

Hi Gbtyke,
I have already cut out carbs, no pasta, no bread, no rice, etc. No fruit at the minute.
I eat
Breakfast
1 scrambled egg and 1 slice of bacon,
Lunch
tuna salad, I will admit don't use mayo, just add a dash of vinger to tuna, 1 lettuce leaf, 1 medium tomato, 1 spring onion.
Evening meal,
usually a salad, or home made curry, i use califlower as rice, I have cut out fruit.

I am not used to eating more than 1 meal a day! That is how i used to eat!
The nurse said i should not worry bit i do!
I have not eaten any nuts or fruit in a week or so now!
I am scared in lots of ways!

Hi cugila,
I have phoned doctor's this morning, And spoken with the nice Gp i like, she said she will phone the endo and she what he has to say! She says herself she thinks the blood sugars are very high!
I don't understand the weight gain! I am not eating too much! Cut out carbs! I am looking into getting a colling gem carb counter book! I dont think that i am even eating 50 carbs a day!
I have cut everything out! I am even making sure that i don't eat fruit what so ever! Bought a smaller plate and done it that way!

Sandy.

Well done. You have done all you can. Don't try changing anything now, might make things worse. Just make sure you see that Endo or your GP gets things sorted sharpish. Keep the pressure on them !

Let us know how you get on ?
Ken. :D

Sandy
Insist on a second opinion
preferably from the diabetes clinic
