Beer for dinner. Type1.

For the past 2 nights i've swapped my evening meal for about 5 pints of lager, (normally I'd only have a couple on a week night). I find the results very interesting, as the sugar in the beer increases my BG readings the alcohol cancels that out over night. I actually woke up low this morning which meant I could enjoy jam on my toast for breakfast which was a nice bonus!

I wont be able to go everyday without an evening meal but its a good alternative if you dont want any bolus insulin, especially those of you that inject.

I just wondered if anybody else had found the same?

I'm Type 1 by the way 20 yrs in, 8 on a pump.

The liver can't supply sugar while it's processing alcohol and so one symptom of a hangover is low blood sugar. Whether the high sugar you get while actually drinking it makes it worthwhile is not certain but I like your approach. Enjoy the beer.

Well short term you are making your liver deal with the toxins in the alcohol so that it can't release glucagon into your bloodstream.. Long term you are storing up liver problems. Not a good idea.

That's the first time I have ever seen someone advocate a beer diet for health reasons ! However not one I would recommend to any type 1. Sadly I think you probably know it's not sustainable for the long term and the damage far outweighs the benefits as @zand has said above. However as a one off experiment then it's an interesting outcome.

I personally prefer food to beer ;)

The bigger issue is how high your BG goes while you are drinking. You'll find that a couple of pints spikes you into the 10-15 range, and higher if you have five....

So while you might not need bolus overnight, you are doing your self no favours on the spiking! Stick to wine.... ;)

What about the time that the beer increases your bg before lowering it over night? I wouldn't be doing this @jimlemans, better to have a couple of beers and have a nice meal with it, I don't drink beer much any-more and tend to stick to red wine, it has a negligible effect on my bg levels.

or vodka :] <3

Not something you want to be doing either, not preaching but you need to be reading up on the forums and looking at how to manage the spikes down. Big spiking and continuous high BGs will both contribute to complications at some point otherwise.

I can't deal with the spikes I always do beer and insulin. I don't seem to have issues with alcohol dropping me later though no matter what I drink so I have to cover those carbs haha

If my BG is at 4 after driving home from work and my evening meal is going to be an hour a pint of good craft beer makes everything OK

I always find my livers response to alcohol different each time..........so could never rely on it...lol....

I only drink at the weekends though.....
