Before breakfast... what should I do?

Low carb cannot hurt you and works on low meds. Bernstein's "low numbers". It takes a little thought and discipline. High carb is manageable, but needs more medication.
Essentially, since it's your body, you have to decide. Reading the success stories thread may help you make up your mind.

Try cutting down the carbs a little at a time.Start with reducing the carbs in one meal of the day, just cut the portion down a bit,see how that goes.

Nurse's advice or low carb... which should I do? :?: :?: :?: :?:
I presume that your Nurse's advice is "eat complex carbohydrates with each meal". I am afraid that most diet-controlled T2 diabetics find that this doesn't work very well. However, anything that works for you is advice worth following. The important thing is to know whether or not it is working for you. What is your typical fasting BG level? If it is under 6 mmol/l, then carry on doing whatever you are doing. If it is much over this then you need to make changes to your diet. If you don't know what your BG is on a daily basis, and have been told not to test, then I would absolutely ignore that advice! Monitoring your BG is the only way in which you can tell whether your diet - whatever it may be - is working or not.

My personal opinion is that T2s have a fairly simple choice. Either you can go on a low carb diet, and control the diabetes either by diet alone or possibly with fairly low doses of drugs. Or, you can eat a much higher carb diet and control the diabetes with much higher doses of drugs. I have written about this dilema in more detail on the NEW COMPLICATION !!! thread. If you don't get your BG to low and stable levels quite quickly, then your condition will degenerate - because high and fluctuating levels of glucose in your blood will eventually kill the cells in your pancreas that produce insulin. However, the good news is that if you can get your BG under control, T2 diabetes doesn't need to degenerate at all - and you can be just as healthy as a non-diabetic.

Thanks - yeah, I had to argue the toss about getting some new test strips for my MediSense machine - they really weren't keen for me to test. I have to say I am feeling really tired, probably getting used to lower blood sugars, but also emotional and confused about my diet....I mean I had an omlette this morning (2 eggs, 2 rashers and 2 mushies) and 2 hrs later I was 9.7mmol.... I'd had a walk and a cup of tea (with sweeteners) - nothing else. I didn't test before though and had quite a few carbs last night. I think I need to get myself into a routine - test, breakfast, test, lunch, test, dinner. I hate all this.... feel like rebelling at the moment. Also being very grumpy with my son because I am tired. Feel rubbish! :(

your body will rebel against lowering bloodsugars. Once you get used to "Proper" levels (in the 5s), you'll find more energy whether you use restricted carbs or loads of meds. At first your system will think you're starving. making you immobile, conserves anergy. It's counter intuitive, but etting some exercise can help. Nothing extreme. just a walk.

Yep, it has to be really chunky, bitter marmalade, with a hint of sweet. My dad makes the best. He and I agree that the optimum amount of marm with a slice of toast (earthy, nutty bread, cut with a knife - not pre-cut), which is smothered in real butter is about half a jar!!!!

Oh well, no more!!! Well maybe a slice on my birthday!?

Sorry.... I AM missing that!

you don't need to have low fat spread or anything low fat. Butter tastes so much better! Fat is NOT your enemy

Hi Tubolard!

I am intrigued about the whiskey marmalade. Despite being Scottish and marmalade being a Dundee woman's invention I have never tried it. One of my favourites is Rose's Lime Marmalade.
I will need to have a wee shot of the whiskey stuff.(marmalade)

Burgen bread with soya and linseed has 11g a slice. You may manage a wee indulgence now and again.
