belated hello

Hi Shaz.

Sorry for that. :( By all means cut back on the carbs but do it gradually and try to eat more healthy foods instead of biscuits and breads etc. I am sure you will soon notice the benefits.
Get yourself a Collins Gem Carb or Calorie Counter book from W H Smith's or similar, priced around £3.99 . They fit in your pocket or handbag. Best of luck and if you need more advice just ask. :D

Good luck Shaz! You really did ought to get to grips with this if you are hoping to keep away from diabetic complications. Hope that you will succeed!

Where do fruit and vegetables fit into your diet?

Best wishes - John

thanks john i made a good start was 14.6 this morning and 9.3 two hours after breakfast not been so good this evening but will try not to have anything else tonite i make carb count for today 172.5 still high but comming down btw i had vegetable soup before work, bit of salad an apple at my break and peas with dinner its a start with fruit and vegetables shaz

Hi shaz.

Good to hear that you are in the right frame of mind to get control of your Diabetes. As you say, a way to go yet, but every little helps. Stick with it. Later on you can start to aim for your Bg levels to at least be within the guidelines. Then you will start motoring....!!

hi cuglia thank you for encouragement even tho my carb intake was still high today! re bg being within the guidelines what are these when you are on byetta? also i'm reading the carb counter book is it best to only use as counter or would it be a good idea to follow 1 of the diet plans it talks about? shaz

Hi Shaz.

The 2009 guidelines for a T2 are as follows.
Fasting(waking)...............between 4 - 7 mmol/l.
2 hrs after meals.............no more than 8.5 mmol/l.

If you can get the post meal levels lower so much the better.

As you can see you are some way off but don't get disheartened, just carry on reducing the carbs and trying to eat more healthy foods. Some fruit, avoid Bananas, plenty of green veg, cabbage, kale, spinach, cauliflower, broccoli not too many peas though ? Try to avoid root vegetables as well, only very small portions.

As for diet plans I would suggest just concentrate for the moment on the reductions and getting your Bg levels down, then later decide what sort of diet suits you best.

Hi again,

I'm with cugila on diet plans, I don't even try to follow anything like that. I try to keep things simple by trying to only eating good stuff in smaller quantities - and continually working at replacing food that makes my bloood glucose levels go high (refined carbohydrates) with foods that don't have any significantly adverse effect - in general low GI foods.

Don't even bring any rubbish into the house - if you have some already then bin it!

hi john i know you are right i must not buy sweets, crisps, biscuits or cakes then they will not be in the house ! it sounds so simple but i have never been able to stop and i've been diabetic almost 18yrs ! also if i haven't got rubbish in the house there's an ice cream man comes round at the same time each night and i can get my crisp and chocolate fix ! the evenings are the worse i don't even feel hungry but just want to eat! shaz
