Evening all, just needed a little rant! Tested this morning and BS was 10.1 and I was mortified with myself. I’m newly diagnosed but after joining the forum and following lower carb & high fat my numbers in a morning had come down from being mid 8s or 9s to 7s so I was happy they had reduced.
Proper shocked this morning and gave myself a pep talk. Just realised that the tonic water my OH and bought to go with a gin was full sugar version! Lesson learnt to check every time.
Anyone else have well meaning loved ones don’t help sometimes?

I made this mistake myself in an airport lounge not long after diagnosis. Thought I was being smart by drinking G&T instead of beer. Tested later on the plane at 13.3mmol/L :hilarious:

Lol. I guess we all live and learn. I’ve always drank gin so the swap has been an easy one :)

Me: oooo that looks lovely thank you! What’s in it?
Well Meaning Family Member: everything you can eat, I made sure of that
Me: thanks for taking the time to prepare that, I really appreciate it and it looks lovely
WMFM: no problem!
Me: (feeling grotty later) can you tell me what was in that?
WMFM: Sure! Low fat spread, lean chicken, Elmlea...

Yeah consider yourself blessed! Prior to diagnosis my vice was IPA and general craft beers. Not very diabetes friendly. Giving all that up was a hard blow. Unfortunately I decided that spirits were probably not the best thing for me, and I didn’t fancy developing a wine habit, so I quit entirely and have been teetotal for nearly 18 months :D

Oh wow that’s amazing! And proper good effort :) I’m happy the odd mothers ruin and the right tonic water will continue to be a nice treat.

Sending you lots of hugs. Sounds like you figured out the culprit. Hope your numbers continue to stabilize.

Awww thank you! And yes huge learning curve, I guess I just want to get into those normal levels best I can as soon as I can :)
Which is exactly what you are doing! A stupid mistake left or right has its place in getting normal levels as soon as you can :). Won't be the last time and I hope you've enjoyed that gin and tonic!

Treat every mistake as part of your education. I went "keto" straight after diagnosis, it took me 6 weeks to reduce the mistakes to a managable level. Then I found that beating myself up was a waste of energy. It is a massive learning curve at the beginning, but does get easier. Husband is super supportive and gone low carb himself after seeing my results. He is at his lightest weight in years.

Housework - hate housework with a passion - and rude people.
I gave up alcohol just after Christmas last year - not easy when you work in a pub! Don't beat yourself up over one tonic water. You're doing so well and this is only a little blip. Treat it as a lesson learned x x

If I'm in a pub doing soft drinks or mixers, I'll insist on getting cans or bottles to make sure it's not the sugary ones, and if I get served from the "gun", I'll not be slow to test the drink with my bg meter: there's been more than once that bar-staff have inadvertently pressed the wrong button on the gun.

A trick from Dr Bernstein, carry some urine test for glucose strios and dip them in the drink ( fresh one's !!) lol
Or if it is
food supposedly low in sugar, chew it a little and put some on the strip, .
52 years ago when first diagnosed with TID i wish i had thought of the urine test strips as they ( and a chemistry set version) were the only glucose testing available outside hospital!
And even looking up watermelon and reading that it was low in sugar did not help !!
Alcohol - i always remeber reading that the yeast producing alchol use it as a way to kill off competition so it is a toxin - just like too much sugar is to us diabetics !!
