If I take say six glucose readings a day what are the best times to do it in order to work out a true mean average please

What is the purpose of your readings?
Most of us will test before than about 2-2 1/2 hours after eating to see what the food has done to our sugars.. sounds like you are trying something else.
As I only eat once or twice a day I take an FBG reading when I get up then before eating and 2 hours after eating.

Cheers I just want to get an average to get an idea of where my hab1c is have been doing waking then every 3 hours for a couple of days every 2 weeks. As learning control through diet I have reduced from 82 to 58 at last docs blood test so getting bit between teeth now and think I'm about 47.5 just really checking I'm not cheating!!!

I was taught that if I was doing an all day check (which I rarely do as I forget to do them halfway though the day!) then it should be ½hr before a meal and 1½-2hrs after.

The thing is though - if you want to control your diabetes, the average is not important, it is the highs. They are what do the damage - assuming that you are not in danger of going hypo.
My strategy was to reduce the amount of time I was high, starting by keeping under 8 two hours after meals.
Eating the same amount of carbs I saw my numbers fall, and then stabilise even though I added a bit more.
By aiming to stay under 7mmol/l all the time my Hba1c was 41 at my 6 month test.
