Beware of highly concentrated green tea supplements!

Thanks, I will be cutting back on the cold brew green tea I make.

Just keep in with regular blood tests. It should flag up any changes.
I can influence the system, no doubt about it.
Moderation is the key.

oh my just goes to show you never know whether anything good for you or not when over the counter, i takle an occasional paracetolol and that is it

Wow this is crazy! I used to take cod liver oil capsules but I thought do I really believe the hype behind them!

Have you seen this?

Interesting. I see that the European Food Safety Authority have said that taking too many of these supplements can cause problems. Tea infusions typically only contain 90 to 300 mg of antioxidants, while most supplements contain up to 1,000 mg, according to the EFSA. Researchers have determined that consuming more than 800 mg of the antioxidants naturally present in green tea can lead to higher health risks, including liver damage. The organization has not determined a dosage of the supplement that it deems entirely safe.

Whatever it was must have been very poisonous to his system, almost akin to poisonous mushrooms. When looking at the signs of liver failure, short and long term, jaundice seems to be the only symptom he displayed. Does he really need a liver transplant? The fact that these supplements are taken by millions of people does beg the question "what else could it be?" "Did he take the recommended amount?"

I wish him well, seems liver transplants a very successful these days.

Excessive Green Tea must poison the liver but excessive any herb/drug can too.
Moderation is the key.

If you have iPlayer, see Horizon, Vitamins.......

If you drink green tea you will be fine so long as you eat. It's the supplements that cause the problem.

The man who had the liver transplant was interviewed.

Anyone who is taking or thinking of taking vitamin or mineral supplements should view this program.

I viewed the program All of the people interviewed were critics of supplementation and nobody interviewed who were in favour of supplementation Therefore one sided. The impression given was that food provided all of the nutrients needed No mention that the intake of alcohol, nicotine and painkillers depleted the body of nutrients The presentation was rather odd Why the interview in scrap yard? IMO the program was one sided and unconvincing

I too viewed Giles Yeo on Horizon last evening (available on iPlayer).
A thought that struck me early on was this, supplements are classed as food and foodstuffs are not tested nearly as rigorously as pharmaceuticals so it follows that very little research has gone into RDAs. Where and by whom were these RDAs set? If, as I suspect, they were set by a committee in a similar way to those set for cholesterol, BMI, Dietary Guidelines etc then I personally would think twice about them as well as being sceptical about the risks/benefits of supplements as stated by the manufacturers.
I have a nasty, suspicious mind that cannot fathom a GRAS label so show me the evidence.

Before I was diagnosed, I believed what it said on the packet. Since diagnosis and after learning about the food industry and big Pharma, I am highly suspicious of everything.
