Hi, this is my first post, and I'm after a little advice.

I'm 30 years old and have had type 2 diabetes for 6 years. I'm slightly overweight (13 stone) although I was over 16 when diagnosed. I'm on 1000 metformin twice a day, and follow a relatively low carb diet (most of the time!). My control is okay, and my last 2 Hba1c readings were 6.5 in September, and prior to that 5.4 last January.

Yesterday I was feeling a bit icky after work to to took my BG and it was 18 mmol! I was shocked as it hasn't been that high since the early days. I did have more carbs that usual - a sausage roll and a mince pie for lunch (I know, but Xmas is alwasys so hard). I took my metformin and took the dog out for an hour and a half, and it crept back down to 13, then by bed time it was 8.

I tested it first thing this morning, and it was back up to 13 mmol again after no food.Took the dog out and had my met and it was up to 14.

I have made an appoint with the doctor next week, to give me a little time so see if I can get my BG levels back down. Anyone have any adivce?

Thanks!

Your Hb1ac suggests good overall control, maybe you just spiked on those days. This happens to me quite a lot, and sometimes for no specific reason.

Regards

I thought that too, but three days later my BG still hasn't dropped below 10 mmol, despite being particularly careful. Off to the doctor this morning so I'll see what he has to say!

If you are feeling unwell and maybe fighting off a virus your BGs will rise, so we all need to be careful out there.

I have trouble with morning BG's. Since reading on here I think I understand it. It seem the liver recognizes that the body is up and running and will release glucose into the blood even before any food is eaten.

Could you try a very low carb diet for a few days? I mean like 30g a day? It would give you a good base line at least.

Let us know what the doc says okay?
Sorry not to be more helpful and welcome to the forum :)

The doctor was stumped! No illness or infection and zero carb diet - had tiny bit of glucose and trace of ketones in urine. In the end the doctor decided to start me on 40mg of gliclazide in addition to the 2 grams of metformin and give it a week. Seems to be reasonably effective - BG down to 6 - 8 except waking reading and post-meal which is still 10 mmol.

Still ketones in urine though - either trace or small amount. However I'm thinking this may be down to the zero carb routine?

I also suffer with anxiety, particularly where my diabetes is concerned and have been checking my BG 10 - 15 times a day, making myself more anxious. Dr suggested this viscous circle is probably pushing my BG up even higher (not to mention making my finger tips extremely sore!).

Back to the doctor after Christmas and maybe an extra Hba1c test.

Thanks for your advice so far!
