Hi folks,

My HBA1c were 5.5% today and so I am really chuffed. However, I managed to get my weight well down after diagnosis in 2008 to 10 stone until this Christmas and have now put on half a stone that I cannot seem to shift.

I low carb trying to keep to around 60g of carbs per day but i do not religiously weigh things. I do not take meds for diabetes only blood pressure and asthma, and my main exercise is gardening + allotment and household chores + walking round the shops - no gym or anything for the sake of it. I work from home very part time and look after an elderly frail parent so perhaps spend more time sitting down than is good for me.

Any ideas?

Is there any chance you could have gained more muscle mass? from exercising more than usual? muscle weighs more than fat so would be perceived as 'fat' weight gain when really all you've done is toned up a bit?

And as you get lighter ahave lost alot of weight it gets hard to get past the last little hurdle,

as your watching your weight and sounds like you may do more exercise than you think whilst caring for someone, up and down stairs maybe and fetching things and assisting in movement. so doesn;t sound like your doing anything you shouldn't be :)

I cannot believe it would be 1/2 stone in muscle - maybe a pound or two.
I am certainly slightly more active now I have the allotment but digging is not really a good type of exercise although carrying watering cans might be. I started putting on the weight in the winter when I was not gardening and thought I would have taken it off again by now.

haha! i didnt mean ALL of it in muscle mass, im sure you'd look like popeye!

I'd say keep going as you are with gentle exercise and eating well and i'm sure you'll get it off!

i'm trying to lose a few pounds myself.. just by cutting down on carbs and fat intake a little and walking for at least an hour a day, so far i'm 4 pounds gone. maybe doesnt sound alot but i'll get there too i hope :)

Yes - I used to before I started this diet.

Good luck, I'm sure you will do it, slowly and steadily - that way you wont put it all on with one lapse. But don't cut out too much fat otherwise you will be tempted by more carbs and hungry. Fat is essential to a low carb diet. I did low carb and am a vegetarian and lost nearly 2 stone inititally but put on a few pounds when I let more carbs creep back. High protein and fats are not very fattening on their own.

I find I do the walking one day then completely forget (I wonder why?). For myself, I need a reason to walk - to the station or shops perhaps but not just in circles.

Thanks :o) i'm not overwieght, my sister is getting married in november so a good half a stone and a bit of toning would do me i think :)

i have three little yorkshire terriers so i tend to walk them through the woods and fields near my house to the next village and back. sometimes i go a little hypo though and have a sit down with lucozade but i'm determined to do it anyway :)

I'm cutting out the bad fats and the sugary carbs, not completely as i do like my food. just being a bit more conscious and eating more fruit and veg instead.

i'm a firm believer in a good diet and exercise to maintain and lose a bit of weight so i'm hoping i prove myself right
