I went to the doctors yesterday and I am very happy. Here's my story.

In march I was told I needed to have another blood test in a month because my HBA1C was 48 and boarder line diabetic. In April my test came back at a HBA1C of 55 and cholesterol of 5.2 weight of 21st 12lbs and BP hypertension. I was gieven the official diagnosis of a type 2 diabetic. I was given 3 months to see how I went or medication would be given. Having a father who's gone blind and an uncle who lost both legs due to diabetic illnesses made me very scared. I knew with my weight and life style I was a walking health risk, but it wasn't enough to keep me on a long term diet. Losing and gaining weigh became a patten. The day I found out I wanted to eat my emotions as I have done for as long as I remember. I remember thinking I wanted to go and buy a load of rubbish and devour the lot, but I didn't. I realized I could let the fear of diabeteses make my condition worse by eating the rubbish, or I could use the fear to light the fire in me I so needed to get into a healthy lifestyle. There is no fear left now, it's been replaced with motivation.

I got a glucose meter and did regular testing, and lots of recherch on diets for diabetics. The one with the greatest successes was the low carb high fat. This is the diet I decided to go for. Not following any particular plan, but I am keeping carbs low enough to stay in ketosis. The Internet is full of low carb/keto recipies, so this helps. The first few I tried were awful, so if you do try keto and find you like nothing, keeps at it. It took several weeks for me to find a nice mix of meals I liked. I also got some keto test strips and I test a couple of times a week just to make sure I'm not going over my limits. I don't measure or record everything I have each day like I did when I first started and only do my bloods in the morning or if I try a new meal. I want it to become a life style but at the same time doing the one BG test per day and a couple of keto tests per week I think is important. We all become complacent at times and things can slip in to our lives and diets without us noticeing too much. I did have one week with some carbs in at week 13 as it's suggested you should only cut carbs out to a keto level for 12 weeks at a time. I ate "real" food not sweets or chocolate carbs. Anything with flour shot my BG right up, but I was pretty good with potatoes. The week after I got right back onto the keto diet.

At the end of last month I had my blood tests done again, my doctors appointment was yesterday. I was excited to see my results because I knew I have been very dedicated and changed my life style completely.
My weight is over 3 stone down at 18st 11lbs, my BP is normal, my cholesterol is 4.5 and my HBA1C is down to 38. :)

I'm very happy. I understand that I will need to stay low carb for the rest of my life, but I also don't mind that. Once my weigh has gone down to a weight I'm happy with I will have one maybe two days per week with carbs. The the rest of the week low carb. I believe this will control my glucose levels and weight, but only by testing will I know for sure.

Brilliant post, well done. have you had a look at the 5-2 diet? It was recommended in the 8 week blood sugar diet. It does work as well, loads of info on the web.:)

Fantastic, very well done. It is difficult to stay on the straight and narrow but worth the effort when you see that sort of result.

That is wonderful news.
I've just posted in the 'newly diagnosed' section asking for advice, this is all very very overwhelming for me and what might work for one person, may not work for the other. I am completely new in terms of the terminology, but interested to learn and I like the idea of the plan that you have tried.
My HbA1C was always 40 for years, despite being borderline diabetic, but it has shot up to 70+ and then to 113 in the last 6 months, but why? I don't know what reading this is ie mmol etc or if it can be converted.

I am enlightened by your good news and it gives me some hope that I can do the same.

Thank you :)

Hi and welcome!

I think you may find the www.bloodsugar101.com website interesting. :) it gives lots of information about how our bodies make the transition from pre-diabetic to diabetic, and will explain what has happened to you.

IF you do read that site, it is worth remembering that American units are different. 180 American units equate to 10mmol/l. Just remember that, and the whole site makes a lot more sense! lol.

And here is a table that shows you how to convert your HbA1c units into the equivalent in mmol/l

Thank you for this information.
It seems I was well over the scale reading at 113. I do hope it has come down when I gave my next test.

Another amazing success story, although Type 2 is no walk in the park I am so grateful that many of us can through diet and determination not only control the condition but also improve other health factors.

What a great testimonial! I'm so pleased for you and I hope that you will keep it going. One of the things that has motivated me is that once I stabilised my blood glucose, everything else seemed to fall into place and I have noticed recently that I have more energy and zest for life. If you ever find yourself drifting, just read your own testimonial and all the comments cheering you on. That should keep you on track! I hope you will keep us up-to-date with your progress as it is encouraging to us all.
