Hi,

I'm still new and only be measuring my blood glucose since Friday.

I took a measurement 3 hours after eating and it was 8.7.

Took a reading when I woke up and it is now 10.7.

How can that be?

Iain

Don’t worry, it’s caused by liver dumping or dawn phenomenon. The liver ‘very kindly’ dumps sugar into our blood stream before you wake up to get you going. Happens in everybody but us diabetics can’t deal with the sugar efficiently. The fasting blood sugar level is the last to improve. Here’s an item on Dawn phenomenon:

You should be measuring at wake up, first mouthful of breakfast (if the first two are minutes apart, then don't bother) and two hours afterwards. Liver dumps are not unusual at all

Hello and welcome to the forum. Yes, liver dumps are part of our lives. Some people manage to almost eliminate them, but I have not done that.
Are you on medication at all? How is the diet going?

Cheers for the info on liver dumps.

Metformin giving v.mild stoma he cramps similar to feeling really hungry.

Lady Monday started cutting out the obvious ****. Quit the booze.

My partner bought me "the 8-week blood sugar diet recipe book.

All meals at home will be straight from the book this week. Need to decide what to do with lunch at work.

One step at a time....

A very good plan to follow :)

Liver dumps are normal and natural. They keep us alive. The problem for T2 diabetics is our insulin isn't working efficiently enough to clear the dumped glucose mainly due to insulin resistance in the liver and other cells. Once the insulin resistance improves, the liver dumps will become a lot less noticeable. They will still happen, but we won't notice them because our insulin will balance it all out.

What sort of lunches were you having before, @BigIain ? If we have some idea of that, folks can probably make some suggestions.

Works canteen stodge. But the chef is dead good so I might try and work with him.

My problem is I enjoy the social side of work lunch and I don't want to be seen as different. I know that's really vain and stupid so as I said one step at a time.

I.

Bacon and egg, mushrooms, tomato? Omelette with salad?

No it is not vain or stupid but completely natural to feel like that but I am sure your work mates and friends will not see you as different diabetes will not change your personality which is what your friends like about you. Hopefully your canteen will have food that is suitable for you like any meat fish and vegetables salads with cold meats cheese or an omelette are fine as are sausages burgers without the roll and if you really want potatoes just have a smaller portion than you used to

My liver is extremely helpful in the mornings. I don't think I've ever woken up with a BG less than when I went to bed.
Given up worrying about it now as I've got the rest of the day under control :)

Thanks for the insights.

I'm so new all this is great information.

I spoke to the chef at work and told home No/Lo Carb plan and he was brilliant.

We went through this week's menu and he suggested things he could do to give me a decent lunch without the carbs.

He is also going to send the weeks menu on Friday so we can modify it for me every week.

Today a stir fried chicken dish, everyone else had egg fried rice and prawn crackers. I had a huge plate of stir fried veg brocoli/peppers/carrot/onion with the chicken.

He's a star!

Your work mates are soon going to want what you’re having! Stir fried veggies are far more tasty than rice or prawn crackers in my view!
