Hi everyone,
Just been for a review at doctors my BG level was 39 below diabetes level, but my cholesterol was 6.7 not keen on going on statins no other health issues I walk an hour a day with my dogs,I eat an exceptionally good diet,no carbs has they spike my BG too much. Been on Low carb diet since January lost a stone in weight BG levels very stable, I am going to see if my cholesterol will start to drop itself has I have been told it can take a while for it to fall into place on this diet so I will give myself six months and see what the outcome is. Anyone with help and advice please get back to me.K

Did you get the LDL/HDL Trigs split, or just the headline number? Recent research suggests that the ratio is more important that the headline number, but many doctors surgeries don't do the split tests as they're more costly

Just called surgery again for breakdown LDL = 4.4. HDL = 1.87. Trigs. =0.90 can anyone explain what I need to do to reduce bad cholesterol level.

Hi @Granny_grump_ , well done on getting your HbA1c down to the non-diabetic level. My cholesterol level also increased from 4.1 to 6.1, and my GP wanted me to go back on statins, but I declined as my ratios had improved.
Since then I have reduced my overall cholesterol figure to 5.8, and my ratios have improved again to good-ideal.
Some GPs work on the overall cholesterol level, but other doctors say the ratios are more important. Your HDL is excellent so your ratios are probably good. You can work them out by entering your HDL, LDL and triglyceride figures on here:
http://www.hughcalc.org/chol-si.php

Edit: My LDL figure is higher than I would like at 3.7, but has reduced from 4.2 last September. I have read on here that reducing carbs more will reduce LDL.

It can normally be reduced with plenty of Omega 3 from oily fish and olive oil, plus moderate amounts of dark chocolate, avocados, red wine, almonds, and walnuts.

HDL can be raised by cutting carbs.

Did you fast for this test? If not, your triglycerides could be even lower. With a triglyceride test after food, the trigs are swimming about in your blood stream doing their job, so on non-fasting tests the levels can be elevated.

Now that menu looks scrumptious!!

While we are losing weight our cholesterol levels can be higher as the fat we're losing is circulating to get excreted. If your HDL is high and triglycerides low then you most likely have the big fluffy heart protective particles.

As @Bluetit1802 said, there are natural ways to reduce cholesterol. Taking some nice walks will help as well as the foods mentioned. Also cutting carbs of course. Not sure how low you are. Eating low carb veggies helps to

In the mean time , if it were me, I would try to avoid statins AT LEAST until your weight loss stops. Even dr Atkins said to get a baseline and then not to do it again until weight loss stops or it could be skewed.

I too believe ratios are more important than total cholesterol. My ratios are all ideal but my total is a tad high. I don't worry about it at all

My dad has very low cholesterol and has gad two heart attacks. My moms is high and she extremely healthy at 86.
They keep changing it all so who's to know. Eat healthy, be healthy. That's all we can do.

My diabetic nurse said that low trigs were the most significant and yours is good. The LDL is usually calculated from a formula rather than measured. There are 2 different formulae but most uk labs use one which is less accurate for low trigs.
I refused statins as the calculator in the comment above gave all my ratios as ideal. I am looking forward to more results in a couple of weeks but I can't see a situation where I would take statins given all the info I have read on the subject.

Granny - The following are the results from the site @Prem51 posted. Personally, I would be happy with those:
