BG Monitor results

I only started monitoring yesterday, but my BG Monitor is yielding some odd results:

2 hours after lunch 6.9
Before dinner 7.9
1 hour after dinner 8.2
2 hour after dinner 8.8 <- Huh?
4 hour after dinner 6.8

Fasting: ie this morning:
8.3
Which I thought was oddly high. So I did it again and got:
7.7 and a third time got 6.9.

I'm using an Accu-Chek Aviva. I wasn't using the same finger each time....should I be? I am washing my hands beforehand as well.

Anyone have any ideas?

Hi.
You will get variations in readings if you keep checking so many times.

I doubt there is anything wrong with the meter - it appears to be within the tolerances allowed. Unless under laboratory conditions you will very likely never get the same reading even when using the same blood sample more than once and in quick succession. Makes no difference what finger you use either.

Your target Bg levels are as follows:
Fasting (waking)..............between 4 - 7 mmol/l.
2 Hrs after meals.............no more than 8.5 mmol/l.

It doesn't pay to get too worried about the odd, odd reading. Just test at normal times and record the results.
I use the Aviva and it provides consistently good results. I would imagine some other unknown variable has crept in here. Not a problem.
There are some people who get quite obsessive about meter accuracy. Don't fall into that trap. If the meter accuracy is fine when tested with control solutions, then it is OK.

Edited: One thing I forgot to mention is that if your hands are not absolutely dry - this can have an effect on the Bg reading. Washing can cause a spurious reading.

Hi white,
Firstly as Ken says just don't panic! I have done that myself! And get strange reading's!
Your best bet is just check at normal times!
Your reading of 8.8, Can you remember what you had at that time?
I find that if I eat a homemade beef burger then my readings are high for 3 hour's! As it gets higher over the 3 hours! Don't panic!
I always panic, I have taken alot of advice from Ken and he has never told me anything wrong to go by!
Did you ahev anything to eat before you went to bed last night?
As some times what is eaten before bed can cause your fasting bg to be high! Don't panic been there myself!
I find that most things i have a reaction to! I have been able to use a meter to find out what affects me the most! At the minute i am maganing to keep off medication at the minute but i think thursday is D-day!
As Ken has said to me medication is not the end of the world! You need to first not be affraid of meter! let it be your friend as it is a good thing! Your meter is fine! I would not be worried about that at all!

Good post i am diagnosed T2 a month ago and it is good to know what my readings are supposed to be.

Nice to see people in similar circumstances.

I was told to test once a week.

I check in the morning and it is around 6 or 7 but was 7.4 this morning but i think that is due to what i ate at dinner, Asda chicken pie and greens but i had a sticky toffee pudding and cream, bad boy.

I got a accucheck aviva as well on the NHS and i do not have any problems with it.

Nice to see your question and reply as it helps me as well.

Davey.

Basically your meals aren't spiking you much, you're just staying high all the time.

One thing you can attack is insulin resistance, metformin and exercise should work, preferably in combination.

Have a read around here

see if anything helps.

It's possible that if you have been running high numbers for some time your body is used to them and is trying to keep them high - "glucose toxicity" which may take a while to break out of. Keep trying for a few weeks and if nothing has changed go back to your doctor, you may need some form of medication. Some doctors who are more proactive will throw meds at the problem initially and reduce or eliminate them later once you have broken through into a more normal range.
