Hi isk.
Welcome to the forum.

As a T2 your Bg levels should be withing the following guidelines.
Fasting (waking)..............between 4 - 7 mmol/l.
2 hrs after meals..............no more than 8.5 mmol/l.
If you can get the post meal numbers lower so much the better ?

As regards your high numbers before considering medication you need to look at your diet and see what is causing such high numbers. 13 is way too high !

It goes up to that level when I take carobo food like bread or pita bread. do you think I shoud take metformin. My GP says its normal to go upto 12 0r 13 if it comes down after one or two hours. Please advise

Hi isk.

Yet again, a GP who is talking rubbish. If he is any good he should know what are the advisable levels. They are certainly not 12 - 13. Has he /she taken out a Life Insurance policy on you ?
Can you see another GP in your practice, someone who knows about Diabetes.

I do not know what Carobo food is ..? However most breads, cereals, pasta, rice, potato and starchy root veg will possibly elevate your Bg levels. The only way of knowing is to test 2 hrs after your meals.

As stated before your diet is the first thing to try then if that doesn't work possibly some medication.

Thanks Cugila
My HBA1c is always at 6 and it is checked after 3months. My GP says that Hba1c is under control, therefore you should not worry if BG goes upto 13 after the meal. Please advise.

The rise in blood sugar after your meals is not outwith the range of usual experience for diabetics but is not normal if you are not diabetic.

Raised post meal blood sugars are a risk for cardiovascular disease because the high blood sugars cause inflammation of the lining of all your blood vessels, the endothelium.

Although your long term control is very reasonable indeed, perhaps it would be best to see if you can reduce the post meal rise in blood sugars.

Things you can do are:

Eat less total carbs with the meal.
Choose lower glycaemic carbs than usual. These usually contain more fibre and less sugar/starch than the refined equivalents.
Add some fat to the meal to slow down carb absorption.

Thanks Katharine & Cugila: It remains under ten after breakfast and lunch. I strict to salads in my lunch. When I take more than three pieces of bread and orange juice in my breakfast, it goes up and same again if I take 2 indian nans with curry it goes up to 13. It comes down to 9 after two hours and further down by the time after a few hours before heavy meal or dinner, I note at 5. Do you think I should take any medicine before I eat any carbs food or heavy meal. My Hba1c is checked every 3 months and its at 6. Please guide if I should I ask my GP to give any medicine to take before heavy meals. He says it normal to go up to that level after meal and your Hba1c is under control. I am worried. Please advise

Isk, you may have salads at lunch but your dinner and breakfast carbs are quite a lot. If you consider reducing the carb amounts at these meals as well you will not get spikes of 13 !

Try and think of lower carb options for breakfast and dinner. Do you have a Collins Gem Carb counter book ? This way you can plan your carb amounts with things that you like to eat.

I am amazed at the amount of stuff you manage to eat. Two nan breads with a curry! I have never managed more than half of one.

It would be best, in my opinion, if you limited the carbohydrate rather than used medicines to control your blood sugar. If you are a baker or would like to learn we can help you out with reduced carb substitutes.

I'm as surprised as Katharine
3 pieces of bread  I wouldn't dare have 1 whole piece. In fact I haven't for a couple of years. I think that's your problem. too much carbohydrate.
Try cutting down. Have more lettuce :)
