BG Rise after Going to Bed

I have been seeing this pattern for a few weeks: whenever I go to bed my blood sugar starts rising. After about 2 hours it starts going down slowly (I use the Dexcom). The rise is by about one to two mmol.

My pancreas still produces some insulin. So my theory is that after going to bed the pancreas relaxes and my blood sugar goes up.

Yesterday I got a pen that supports 0.5 units and I'm thinking I will bolus 0.5 before going to bed. Any comments?

I'm always a bit cautious doing a correction before bed. If your levels are naturally dropping later then you also run the risk of going too low. Personally I think I'd live with a 1 mmol rise for an hour or two.

Agree with that. But since it has become so consistent, I thouht I could try to treat it somehow.

If it was me, I would also exercise caution with corrections at bedtime. I have a pump so can correct with fractions of units, but I always slightly under correct at bedtime just to be safe.

What's yoyr normal BS before bed and how high does it rise? If you tend to be 5 and it rises to 6 for a couple of hours, I wouldn't bother correcting, but that's just me :)

Yes. These are more or less my values.

I agree one needs to be particularly cautious in this case. I may try 0.5 unit and rely on the Dexcom alert to wake me up if I go too low during the experiment.

To be honest @cz_dave, if you are only rising to 6 for a couple of hours before you drop back again, there is no need to bolus.

I must be psychic ;)

I think we all have our own values we're comfortable with. For me, a 6 is fine as I know my non-diabetic friends, who have the misfortune to be subjected to my BS testing sometimes, are often in the 6s at various times. It also depends on your correction ratio and how sensitive you are to insulin at that time of day. Do report back on your experiment :)

When do you eat dinner? Could it be a delayed spike from a large protein dinner?
Do you ever take 1/2 units without food? Do you know what average drop you get? I can get between 20 and 30 but it's always random. Sometimes none and I have seen up to a 40 pt drop

Makes sense. I have recently been sick and so the rise was beyond 6 and lasted until early morning. I would probably treat it in a case like this.

I think it is not food-related.
