I don't understand the human way of keeping a BG record you don't record times of bloods just before or after meals. I come from the veterinary side and we use the time being as important as the meal. I tried to find a pre done record to keep my BG on but none had times on so designed my own via word.

Last year my then partner now husband went into hospital to do a 72hr fast in case he had pancreatic tumours luckily it seems he just doesn't always digest his food, so they say but his hypo episodes have stopped so am happy...
I digress his BG record was a badly spelled photocopy written by hand before and after breakfast lunch dinner. I spat my dummy and hauled the ward sister over coals she tried to tell me the consultants said they should use those but seeing l was about to remove her body parts found a graph with times and meals on and used that alongside the "official" one. At one point the consultant saw me, we had a quick chat and he mentioned the graph puzzled, l made it clear that to do otherwise was totally unprofessional given the amount of tests he was having over 72hours he was FASTING and only allowed water *** were they playing at. He backed off but l know they all ignored the correct sheet seems insane to me. Saying that sanity is not a requisite of the health service certainly in my area.

Can someone enlighten me as to why there is no bother to keep times l have no intention of not keeping them but why do you only half do things with humans?
 
I record times and there are many apps out there as well as free BG monitoring books. It's just a personal thing. Some don't record anything and some record their entire lives. The choice is out there, just make it !

I recorded EVERYTHING and now nothing hehe, the dn i think thought i was insane as she glanced over my records, the doctor glanced at the first page for a millisecond then folded it and gave it back, HE FOLDED IT what a bloody cheek, i treated it like the orignal american bill of rights and he FOLDED IT, anyway i digress lol
 
Hey Mud, I'm a vet myself but unsure what you mean really. Are you ref to a BG curve?
With use the best is just before a meal then 2hrs post. I know in my patients we do BG curves with tests each hr, but for a long standing diabetic we test at the nadir just prior to a feed/admin of insulin (if it were just a snap test)
This follows the pattern of my teaching.
Clarify what you mean though?

Hi Dazza yes l know the before and 2 hrs post l was talking about the hours time not l guess area time (pre/post food) they were taken.
Whenever l have taken any bloods at work for diabetic animals the hour times we took them were just as an important part of recording as the area time... had that drummed in me when l once forgot to hour time in, never again have l forgotten to add it in.
The only time it isnt so critical is the bloods being sent off but usually that is recoded on their notes as well. In house though always an hour time.
Humans don't seem to record hours time as far as l can see for any reason... even the 72hr fasting l mentioned. l was puzzled why.

Hope that makes sense not sure how else to put it.
 
What was the recorded time used for with animals?
 
Activities and metabolism at various times of the day. Probably more stable in animals but more unstable in humans unless at work in at say a desk job.
 
I was thinking the same. My time of day would be no use at all. My activity varies, my meal time and load vary, the only thing that's any use is my pre and post readings, and what I ate.
As to a fasting test, surely the only use would be for the immediate reading, to ensure the number is fine at that time, or to spot a trend, unless it would have some historical value?
 
For me, I find that the key readings are pre-meal and 2 hours post, plus bedtime. I record these as "event" related and use the data to graph long term trends. If I were to record these as times, graphing would not be possible becasue mealtimes and waking times vary. I also record additional datapoints sometimes and will also make notes in the margin so to speak. If I want a true tiem trace, I can always record those specially, such as when I'm trending my exercise response.

The meter does record the time rather than the event, so every time I plug that in to the ,laptop I get the true time trace as well as the event log.
