Have been Keto for 4 weeks. Getting better results with no meds but if I go shopping or gardening my bgl rises from 6.5 to 9.1.
How can I stop this happening?

Welcome @AusRobyn
It's just your body doing what it has evolved to do, the release of certain hormones signals the liver to release some stored glucose. Its why our first test of the day can be higher than the last one at night, (dawn phenomenon) there are many reasons why you might have a release of stored glucose. Exercise, fasting, emotional upset, lack of sleep, etc, etc. It happens to everyone but if you don't have diabetes your insulin does its job and that extra glucose gets removed from your blood and used for energy.

How can I stop this happening?

All you can do is exactly what you are doing, continue with your keto diet. If you don't put new glucose in(carbs) eventually the amount you have in storage will decrease but don't expect it to happen overnight.

I found that my levels rise for some exercises and fall for others.
It depends on a few things for me
- stop-start exercise/activities will cause my levels to rise
- anything "uncomfortable" will cause my levels to rise
- anything I am "unfit" at will cause my levels to rise

For lowering levels (or not making any difference)
- continuous exercise for at least 20 minutes
- if outside, do it on a pleasant day - not wet, cold and windy and not hot and sweaty
- persevere. Running used to make my levels rise but as my body got more used to it, the impact on my blood sugars changed.

We are all different but my recommendation would be to keep at the activities, especially if you have only just started.

I’m a type 1 so slightly different. I have to inject a small amount of insulin before swimming. To counteract rises. Showing that your body kicks out glucose to help with the activity.
One thing you could do is eat something so your body knows it’s going to get energy. It could still be from your keto list.

Walking and exercise bike/cycling for me is fine, but as soon as I lift weights then BSG can rocket.
As mentioned before, it's just the natural process of your body (liver) releasing extra glucose to compensate for the added stress which is great for non-diabetics but for diabetics, it just ends up in the bloodstream if you haven't got the means to deal with it instantly.

Despite the short-term spikes, exercise in the long-run is better for you than none at all. Both mentally and physically.

I am in exactly the same boat. My blood sugar is always higher in the morning but also if I go out walking/shopping or go for a jog or do yoga it goes up despite doing if/low carb. It’s reassuring to know that if I persevere (only been low carb for 3 weeks) this will potentially improve.

I experienced this too. After 30 mins high intensity exercise my bg raised by 1,5, but after 30 min of resting I tested again, it was lower than before I started the exercise.

I researched this and found it is normal.
