Thank youI admire you too and also think you are a winner. I get depression in addition to the diabetes so cannot imagine what it must be like to deal with bipolar as well. Big hug coming your way
I will be downhearted if I Don, t get them, but am not expecting my gp to agreeIf you have an underlining condition which needs your bg to be monitored closer. You should be granted strips hun.
Your bipolar specialist is saying that IS the case for you. I'd be disgusted if you get refused.
I saw my psych yesterday. Reluctantly he has put my anti psycotic up.
Reason for that, is I am having a rather bad phase. The med on the whole is helping me but the increase is to tide me over. The med is Apperently notorious for affecting blood levels especially who have diabetes.
I have tried other meds with not much help.
Over the past 8 months on this med, my appetite has increase and am worried as scared that hunger will get worse. Also in that time, there is a slight rise in my blood levels.
I explained to my psych that I am testing regular and I casually said about funding the test strips myself.
He was flabbergasted that I was self funding. I explain that very few type 2,s get strips on prescription. And that type 2,s on a certain med, can,t thing of the name or on Insulin, are issued with test strips.
My psych is writing to my gp to say that at the moment the anti psycotic I am on can cause higher levels in diabetics and is asking if he can have a change of heart and issue me with the strips.
I am not confident that my gp will.
My psych also said that with this med and higher blood levels that my gp should be doing more blood monitoring then once a year.
So at the moment I am just not sure what to do
Thank you. I am not optimistic that my gp will issue me with a meter and strips xYou are realistic Ally!! That good really, not alliwing yourself to get happy, happy that could get strips etc...
Admire you for how far you have come and significantly so, that you do your damndest to keep levels of everything controlled. You are juggling more than just diabetes.
Recognise a big hug and clap on the back from me. Hopes too that you can get a true positive result from GP.
Sorry I pressed the funny faceAlly I am glad you have found a consultant who is helpful and listens to you. Let's hope your GP listens too. I really admire how far you have come since joining us and how you have battled to overcome your problems. Whatever the outcome keep on battling because you are worth it. Good luck with your GP. Lots of hugs
Sorry I pressed the funny face
Thank you. I doubt my gp will issue me with a meter and strips. He is a very hard man to get anything from.
Not sure whether to see if I can request to see the DN nurse, because with the increase in the anti psycotic, am worried that my blood levels will rise again, before on the previous dose, levels has risen slightly. The med apparently is notorious for trouble with type 2,s. My psych was reluctant to increase the med, but he did to help with my bad episode of bipolar which I am having at the moment. I am not keen if I have to change that med as apart from now, I am pretty much stable on it. I have also noticed an increase in hunger.
That's a good idea.Ally, in your shoes, if I could, I'd give it a few days for the Consultant's letter to arrive with your GP, then see the DN. She will be able to see it in your records and know how the Consultant feels.
I can understand why you would have this on your mind.
Fingers crossed for you.
I am on queapine.Hi Ally,
Can I ask which anti psychotic you are on? I was recently on Olanzapine, I couldnt stop eating and put on the best part of three stone in three month's, all I craved was sugar and carbs. My Hba1c went up to 53 and I was diagnosed as diabetic. I've been on several anti psychotics but that was the worst, I'm now on respiridone and have been able to take back control of the carbs etc. It does vary which medication were put on as to the effect they may have physically. Maybe a change in medication may suit you better. I find most anti psychotics are very good at its job its just the side effects that let them down.
Sorry for waffling on.
Maggie
Thank you, next time I see the psych I will mention that medAlly have you ever tried Tegretol (CZ) at all as a way of controlling the manic side of bipolar? Also, although a bit outdated, Haloperidol in small doses can restore normal behaviour in mania within 2hrs of taking it. It does have side effects if taken long term though but it doesn't cause weight gain. Another medication which many women take to deal with hormone activity in breast cancer is Tamoxifen. This has been trialled I think in bi polar to control swings in mood but not sure how effective it was.
Thank you, next time I see the psych I will mention that med
That's interesting to knowTamoxifen for cancer screwed my brain!!

I'm bipolar and have type 2 diabetes . I have tried lots of combinations of medicines over the last 15 years since I was diagnosed with the bipolar . Currently I'm on venlaflaxene and risperidone and depakote . Stay away from olanzapine if you can it turned Me into a hungry beast and I put 6 stone on . I've lost nearly 4 stone in 6 months on the low carbon program . My hba1c is good and I'm currently off metformin for a 3 month trial without it . Talk to your psych and your gp about about finding a combination of mess that doesn't mess with your levels . If your gp doesn't play ball see a different gp . You are under no obligation to only see the gp you are registered to . You can request to see another doctor . Hope you get it sorted . . And if you ever want someone to talk to about bipolar or mental health send me a message I'm happy to chat .
