Hi, been diagnosed for 3 years type 2. My most recent hba1c is 86 last was 81. I'm on 4 metformin (500mg) and 2 gliclazxide (80mg) plus statin (40mg). Today my doctor added in canaglifozin (100mg).My diet is pretty good. Lowish carbs . brown rice and pasta if any. Load's of veg and fruit. Not many spuds. Low alcohol. Don't smoke. On my feet 12 to14 hours a day work is 50 to 60 hours. I'm a chef. Exercise is Low to OK. I was swimming twice a week but due to ear infections am now jogging / shuffling four times a week. My question is why is my diabetes getting worse. Plus point cholesterol is fine!!

Fruit? What exactly? 86 is far too high so something's amiss, especially after 3 years

Hi @farmerchef75, it could be the ear infections? Generally blood sugars rise with any infections and may have thrown this test?

Hi @farmerchef75 ,

Welcome to the forums, may I ask what you mean by lowish carbs ? In the UK the recommended daily intake is 250/260g per day, most T2 folks around here eat a lot less.

I would second that fruit isn't good for Type 2 diabetics. It contains a lot of fructose, which is sugar by any other name. Additionally, fructose is dealt with in the liver rather than the stomach, and is a major culprit in giving us fatty livers. A fatty liver is exactly what we don't want as it causes insulin resistance in the liver, which in turn causes us to have higher blood sugar levels.

Bread, potatoes, rice, pasta, flour and breakfast cereals are all high in carb (including the wholemeal brown varieties). Do you limit these foods?

Do you have your own blood glucose meter?

Hi. Do you have any excess weight? If not it's always possible you are not T2 but late onset T1. If so the Gliclazide will help at least for a while. If the blood sugar still does not come down then you may need to go onto insulin. Don't worry if you do as it's a nuisance rather than a problem and really works. BTW the Gliclazide dose could be increased as mine was to 320mg/day but moving to insulin earlier rather than later is preferable. Do discuss options with the GP.

Hi farmer,
From reading a lot of peoples stories on here there are some, and you may be one of them, who simply can not tolerate carbohydrates.

Lets assume that's correct for just a second.
Looking at the food you mentioned
  • Low-ish carbs = carbs = sugar
  • Brown rice = complex carbohydrate = carbs = sugar
  • Brown pasta = complex carbohydrate = carbs = sugar
  • veg = can be high in carbs anything that comes out of the ground onions mushrooms etc... = carbs = sugar
  • fruit = can be high in carbs + high in natrual sugar = sugar + sugar
  • alcohol if beer = carbs = sugar
Perhaps you eating a lot more carbs & sugar than you think.:banghead:

You mentioned your a chief, never met a chief yet who doesn't pick at things through the day.
Also I imagine you have to taste what your cooking, so call it 10 T-spoons a day of extra food (carbs) you hadn't even thought about.

That would be my first place to look cutting way down on the carbs to see if that helps. ;)

Yes, very true.
