Once a year i spent two to three months in South East Asia and there are always people telling me it is good for diabetic people. People also eat it more when they are feeling sick. AND i also hear a lot that most old people like it. It is most popular in Vietnam. If i am right i once heard it also available in South America. Of course if you live in Western Europe in a city with a few Asian people it will be expensive. If it would have a similar price like aubergine ( called eggplant in Vietnam)i would buy it once a week. Being bitter, usually kids will hate it.
