Hello, my 30yr old son has just lost his eyesight due to retinopathy. His care quality in Derbyshire is questionable and getting a pump is impossible at the Derby Royal.

Can anyone provide information on different types of pens which will (a) be available on prescription and (b) assist with improving his control. I'm thinking perhaps a finer resolution and a memory of last dose.

I am on omnipod pump but have backup pens called novorapid flexipens for fast acting and lantus for background insulin. I get all 3 on prescription.

So sorry to hear your report.

Is your coverage in derbyshire from a GP or a specialist? I would perhaps call diabetes UK and ask them for advice on a better local clinic or at least for some support.

I wish you and your son well.

When my dad lost his sight this is one of the things he struggled most with, he was T2 on insulin. I don’t have much info but I know there is a talking pen but that was pretty useless for my poor dad was deaf too. I did contact the local blind charity and also he had assessments from the blind & partially sighted clinic at the hospital, maybe there is something like that that your GP can refer your son too.

Also you may know this but look on the government website for reductions in things such as council tax and dad was entitled to a free TV license- small things but every little helps

I'm so sorry to hear of your son's troubles, @CLA.

@lovinglife makes a great suggestion about contacting a blind charity. My mother was (not diabetes related) partially sighted and found various bits and bobs of information and gadgetry from the RNIB to be excellent.

In terms of his diabetes care, I don't know how mobile you are, but if your son (assuming with assistance) is mobile enough, you could consider changing clinics?

If you want to do that, please do some research on where he might want to go, and where he considers his care might improve (I guess you have Leicetershire and Nottinghamshire not a million miles away). His GP would then affect the referral process.

Additionally, under the NHS your son is perfectly entitled to ask for a second opinion on any aspect of his care, or aspects of it. That second opinion need not be at the same hospital or even in the same area as his current care, so again, your son would have to do some research for where things might be more sympathetic. Again, the GP makes this reeferral.

A second opinion might be slightly less disruptive, in the shorter term, that a change of area, however, if he does go down that route and thee second opinion is for changes to his regime, that might be better achieved by moving clinic at that time, so, again, take the ability to get to that hospital/clinic into account in choosing the consultant.

Good luck whatever your son decides to do.
