Blood glucose going up during the night

Hi everyone, having only been diagnosed with Type 1 for just over a week I'm still trying to work out my doses.

At the moment I take 8 units of lantus in the morning and 8 units of nova rapid with my breakfast and then 4 units of novo rapid with all other meals, however from checking and writing down my blood glucose levels, I've seen that it consistently goes up by 5 mmol every night which starts me at a high blood glucose for the day, is it worth me taking some extra lantus before bed to counter act this?

I've heard of people splitting their lantus dose but with me only taking 8 units, splitting into just 4 units in the morning keeps me at high levels all day.

I have an appointment with my DSN next week but I want to sort this out as soon as possible!

This sort of thing happens with something called the dawn phenomenon. Its where your body dumps some sugar to get you ready for the day. I don't seem to suffer from it at the moment but I am sure someone who does will be along soon. Have a quick Google search.

Edit: Also as you are new, dawn phenomenon may not be the issue, it could be your basal dose. Your basal dose may need tweaking. I took a while to get my basal correct.

Hi @hollyh97 i would bring this up with your DSN next week , or give them a call on Monday - it does take a while to get the basal dose sorted.

Hey @hollyh97 welcome to the forum. I know how it feels to want to make changes, however when you are first diagnosed your team will want to see some patterns first before making any changes, so if you can keep a diary to show your readings and doses this will give them a good picture of what's going on. Don't worry about waiting before seeing your DSN, please remember it's a marathon not a sprint, it will improve but they will change over time too, so it's great that you have the confidence to think about doing these changes your self, however we cannot give you advice about your adjustments as your team will want to manage this with you. Let us know how you get on ;)

You might find that taking your Lantus dose before bed rather than in the morning keeps you stable better overnight. However, you should definitely speak to your nurse before doing this!!

Thanks for all the advice! The dawn phenomenon sounds about right to be honest and yeah I do understand that messing with my own doses early on is abit risky so I'll wait for my appointment on Thursday and keep you all updated and hopefully will solve the morning highs!
