blood glucose level ranges

Hi - I am type 2 diabetic [Metformin] and have been testing my blood glucose level ranges all weekend as I haven't been feeling too well - bit out of sorts and they have been ranging from 18.9 [never been this high before] down to 6.9 [1st thing in the morning] but usually levelling out in the 12 range [which is still very unusual]. I am also on a 5 day course of steroid tablets and co-amoxiclav course which ends today so not sure if these tablets have had an affect on my sugar levels. This morning driving to work struggled with a bit of blurred vision but ok now - just wondered what I can do to and/or eat to reduce my levels - had oats, yogurt and fresh fruit for breakfast. Thank you

Hi covey 63 try omiting the oats and apples and if the yogurt is not greek full fat drop that too. I usually have eggs and bacon or full fat greek yogurt with raspberries, lookat the thread " what have you eaten today for ideas , all the best

Steroids don't help, but a 5 day course is unlikely to have had so much of an effect.

When are these high readings? Are they 2 hours after meals, before meals, or when? If they are 2 hours after meals, are you also testing before you eat so you can see the difference? Oats and fruit are not generally wise choices if your levels are high. I am another one that has full fat Greek yogurt with raspberries, strawberries, or blueberries for breakfast. I never eat cereals or porridge, although a few people can manage small amounts of porridge made with mostly water, but their levels are less than yours.

Thank you all very much for your responses and will look into the full fat Greek yogurt. I am also doing Slimming World for the past 7 months and have found the oats, fresh raspberries / blackberries very good in the morning and has never interferred with my levels beforehand - only have 35g of oats. I have had to adapt SW to what I can and can't eat as a diabetic and have just tested myself again and am 18.8 again after a lunch of lettuce, chicken, baby bel cheese, artichoke and clementine. If your levels go sky high - is there anything you should eat or drink like toast, carbs, orange juice. This is the first time since I've been diagnosed I have experienced problems like this, hence I think it could be down to these tablets and if it is hopefully will start getting back to normal now. Once again thanks for all your help x

The clementine won't have helped.

If your levels are sky high, the last thing you need is more carbs or fruit. I would drink plenty of water to flush out those kidneys, and I mean plenty. Keep an eye on these levels and go back to see your doctor.

A five day coarse of Steroids will push up you bg levels. And it could go up a lot.I had to increase my insulin by at least 25 units a day to compensate when I had to take them. From 28 units to 53 units a day. Also oats and fruits will increase your bg levels.

If you have never had problems like this before then it probably is the tablets hopefully you will go back to your normal levels when you have stopped taking them

The clementine will have raised your level and the steroids may have a bit.

Do you feel well? You could be coming down with something and your BG is just an early sign.

A low fat high carb "Slimming" World diet is the worst for a type 2 diabetic. It's borderline criminal what they do.

I've had great success with a low carb high fat diet: http://www.dietdoctor.com/lchf

It started stabilizing my blood glucose right away. Funny, oats for breakfast spikes my blood glucose higher than having pastries! I definitely recommend a switch to a low carb breakfast. Bacon and eggs or full fat plain yogurt and berries is an excellent idea!

Clementine's have a Low Glycemic Load so wont push BL levels up to what the OP is getting.
