Hi Everyone
Just wanted to ask your opinions about BG levels. I was diagnosed 2 weeks ago and have since been on the LCHF diet. Although my BG levels have improved from diagnosis, I still can't get them under 6. Before my dinner tonight my BG was 6.8(good for me) but 2 hours later they are 9. For dinner I had a small unsmoked gammon steak with mushrooms and fried tomatoes followed by 5 raspberries and a little single cream (needed something sweet!!) Why have they risen so high? I'm finding it quite difficult to keep my levels stable. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Mazza

At just two weeks from diagnosis that is not bad - expecting under 6 is a bit optimistic at this stage - I was still trying for under 8 after meals at around 2 months I believe, though my levels did drop fairly fast after that.
Your metabolism probably took some time to reach what it was at diagnosis, so it is most likely going to need a little time to get back into balance, but the LCHF diet seems to be the most powerful tool for type twos to start off with to lever things back into place.

Give it time. You must have heard a hundred times on here that this is not a sprint. It is a marathon.
Keep going, keep testing, keep the food diary, watch for patterns ... and ignore the actual levels for now. Just look at the actual rise from before to after.

May I ask why "a little single cream"? A dollop of double cream or a dollop of full fat yogurt may have been a bit better.

I'm not sure about eating to much high fat as my cholesterol levels are high, especially the trig. levels. I've probably been reading so much about what to eat and what not to eat, I'm getting paranoid lol. My weight has never been a problem and I've read that because of this it will be hard to reverse diabetes and that it will only get worse in time. Not what I want to read!!! Still. I know it's early days and I suppose I'm still trying to come to terms with it. It's my partner's birthday next week and normally we would have a meal out and a bottle of wine to share, but I'm off the booze as I'm on metformin and not sure if alcohol will interact with it. Anyone know? Sorry for all the questions, but I'm still learning.

Many Thanks

Yes, Metformin and booze do not mix.
If it is any help, my triglycerides were 2 at my first retest after diagnosis and 1.5 after 6 months on a LCHF diet - with all the numbers normal ideal or good. That included my BG levels too.

if your between 5-7 for most of the time your fine. dont see anything to bad in your meal.

Give it more time and don't worry! Took me about 6 weeks to get a reading under 6. You'll get there! Best of luck.

Hi and welcome @mazza 2 ! It is quite hard and confusing after initial diagnosis and will take you a few weeks at least to learn just what you can eat without pushing up your BG. You only mentioned your dinner readings - are you also testing at other times too? You really should as it will help you better understand your personal food-BG relationship. It's good though that you've adopted LCHF and actually your reading is pretty good with just a 2.2 post-prandial rise.
Personally I wouldn't worry too much about fat increasing you cholesterol. Mine fell on high fat!
