Hi everyone, I have been having problems with my blood levels. I have recently come off Metformin due to continual diarrhea and put on 80mg of gliclizide . My fasting bloods are anything from 4.2 to 6, 2 hours after this it can range between 7 and 10, but I also take a lot of other meds including prednisolone at 7.5mg daily, sometime increased to 12.5mg I know this can increase the blood sugar levels. 2 hours after lunch, usually a bowl of soup and a roll, it shoots up to 11 to 15. After evening meal it can be anything from 7 to 13 plus. Then the fasting one is back down to 4 to 6. My GP seems to think this is fine, I don't, I think this is erratic and I don't know where to go from here.

Any thoughts greatly appreciated.

I suppose you could say your post meal readings are spiking a tad higher than you would like...........

I assume you don't test regularly before meals?

If your not wanting to increase your medication then you should be looking to choose different things to eat, low carb and low GI........

whats a typical dinner....?

Hi Jan

My experience is very similar to yours, and I was just about to post the same question. I was diagnosed 3 weeks ago, and put on metformin (500 mg three times a day. I'm on 40 mg prednisolone for polymyalgia rheumatica (PMR). My fasting BG is coming down, and was 5.4 this morning, down from 8 or 9 3 weeks ago.

But my levels during the day are all higher much like yours. e.g. Evening meal last night was beef cooked with onions and mushrooms, followed by a handful of blueberries and my BG was still 11.1 at 11pm

one thing I have worked out, though is that porridge only raises my BG by about 2, so I thought it was going to be ok for me. But a bit more playing about and I think it is on very slow release, and keeps my BG higher for longer. Also puy lentils (Merchant Gourmet packet) seem to kick it up.

I'm thinking that the erratic movements during the day may be down to prednisolone, as that is taken first thing in the morning.

I'm going through lots of testing strips trying to work things out

Sorry should have read 80mg Gliclizide in the morning. My typical dinner would be salmon, asparagus, new potatoes or cous cous, casserole/stew, roast dinner, fish salads.

Hi Margaret,

I think a lot of mine is down to the prednisolone and on occasion my sweet tooth!!! I too have porridge in the mornings thinking it was ok. I think I will have to keep checking it and go back if it keeps fluctuating. Hope you get yours sorted soon.
