Hi everyone.
I'm new to the forum and would appreciate a bit of advice.
I was diagnosed Type 2 a couple of months ago. I have joined slimming world and have lost 2 1/2 stone so far with change of diet and exercise so going in the right direction there.

I was thinking of getting a Blood Glucose monitor and was wondering if anyone can recommend an accurate reliable one.
This is all new to me so any help would be appreciated.
Thanks.
Mike.

Hi NYMike and welcome to the forum. Congratulations on your weight loss so far and yes it’s a really good idea to get a blood glucose meter. Some slimming world type diets although they obviously helping with weight loss may not always be very good for blood sugars as they tend to have too many carbohydrates (which turn to sugar once ingested) for us Type 2s. If you get a meter you’ll be able to check it’s suitability for you.

Here’s a link to this forum’s useful info for newly diagnosed:

Here’s some info on meters, and to be clear I have no commercial connections with any of the companies mentioned. For a meter with cheap strips go for the Tee2 + found here:

http://spirit-healthcare.co.uk/product/tee2-plus-blood-glucose-meter/ with the strips found here:

http://spirit-healthcare.co.uk/product/tee2-testing-strips/

With more expensive strips is the Caresens Dual which I currently use, this one has the advantage of glucose and ketone testing in one machine, it’s to be found here:

https://shop.spirit-health.co.uk/collections/caresens-dual

And to be totally transparent I used to use the SD Code Free which has the cheapest strips available. However I found itto be becoming less and less reliable. Here it is for anyone wanting to give it a go:

and here for the extra strips

http://homehealth-uk.com/all-products/sd-codefree-test-strips-to-be-used-only-with-the-sd-monitor/

There are discount codes if you buy in bulk.

5 packs 264086

10 packs 975833

Don’t forget to check the box that you have diabetes so you can buy VAT free. (for all meters and strips)

Hi Rachox,
Thank you for the welcome and all the links, I really do appreciate it.
I'm finding Slimming World fantastic for weight loss and enjoy the group support but as you point out some of the meals are for losing weight but not necessarily Diabetes friendly so I being careful with carbohydrates.
Thank you again so much for your help and advice.
Mike.

@NYMike I use a Abbott Freestyle Lite meter, which was a freebie from Abbott, the strips are a bit on the expensive side as I do not get scripts from my GP as a T2.

You should get them from Amazon as you live in America (I see you mention New York in another thread) at a reasonable price. Ooops I was looking at the wrong thread.

Get the meter here free.
