Hi everyone, I'm a newbie type 2 for 4 wks, I'm going to the doctors on thurs, got question to ask, one is about Blood glucose monitors, can I get one on nhs, if I can't and have to buy one, what is the best one, thanks sharron.
You should get one from the docs for nowt.
Many chemists are also giving them away.
It depends where in the uk you live to whether you get a free monitor. And you will also need the strips and lancets which you should / maybe will get on prescription from your Diabetic Nurse.
Wait until your 1st meeting and see if they will give you a monitor and a script for strips and lancets (You will need both of these to carry out your daily monitoring.) Strips are the little plastic things that you put in the monitor. You prick your finger with a lancet usually housed in a lancet device which you get with your monitor.
You then put your test strip in the monitor... Then prick your finger and feed the blood into the strip which is already in the machine. The you get your reading and you are away.
(Soory if I am sounding basic but I am assuming you are a newbie)
I was diagnosed about a month ago. (Type 2,no medication ....Yet) I felt sure that my doctor wouldn't prescribe me a monitor so I got in touch with Glucomen ( Google it) and asked for a monitor and they sent one out the next day. They will happily give you a free monitor as what they are relying on is that you will organise a script with your doctor. You get 10 'free' strips and 10 'free' lancets' in a kit. And a lancing machine to put your lancets in,then you prick your finger.
There are many companies who will send you out a free monitor. Glucomen ( Recommended by me) Bayer,Abbot... You just contact them from their various websites and they will usually send you out a free monitor.
There are many links on this fine website for free monitors.
See what your Diabetic Nurse will offer you. If you are offered a free monitor all well and good. Your diabetic nurse will then sort you a prescription for strips and lancets.
If you have to sort it out yourself, as I said contact the companies I quoted and ask for a monitor.
As it happened on my first Diabetic Nurse appointment I was offered a monitor and strips. I wasn't expecting that. I said I already had a monitor and gave her the little card that comes with the Glucomen box and she organised a prescription straightaway.
PM me if you want anymore help.....
