Blood glucose of +20 for over a month.

For years I have been told I was boarder line diabetic then last year I was told I have type 2 diabetic and prescribed Metformin. The reaction I had to Metformin cost my wife and I £2,100 in new carpets and furniture. I then cut out all sugar and bought a glucose monitor which showed on average my blood glucose was 7-10 mm/l. Now for the last 4 weeks my monitors shows I have a blood glucose of 20-30 mm/l. I have absolutely no symptoms at all, not even wanting to pee or drink. I have bought a second glucose monitor which tells me the same 20-30 mm/l. Any suggestions as to why.

Please tell me that you have made an appointment to see your GP.

Hopefully some T2s will be along soon to make more suggestions.

I have sent an e-consult to my GP but, I don't hold out much hope (a very long story)
 
I second the need for a visit to your doctor/diabetic nurse.

When you say you cut out sugar did you cut out only actual sugar, or try a low carb diet? Can you give us an idea of what you usually eat.
 
My diet is somewhat bland as my liver will not process some of the common sweeteners, the first time I tried a sugar free drink I was in hospital for 2 week. I eat mainly salad's with ham or beef.

Do you have any bread, potatoes or pasta with your meals? Some folks find them very tricky in terms of blood sugars.
 
Hi. It's all carbs that matter to us and not just sugar. It sounds like you may actually be T1 (LADA). If you are not overweight then LADA becomes more likely. Do ask for the two tests i.e. GAD and C-Peptide. BTW standard Metformin often causes bowel problems. The Slow Release (SR or MR) version normally avoids that.
 
20+ mm/l for over a month is a level that is dangerous for your life. It is possible that in this case, insulin is needed, and not metformin. Even if you don't have any symptoms, it's very dangerous. Seriously, call an ambulance.

The chances of me calling an ambulance are remote. I do not go to any hospital for treatment of any kind unless sedated. I can not explain why in an open forum but to say last November I was found outside an A&E with hypothermia from being covered in my own vomit after being treated in that A&E.

No matter how horrific a past experience may have been IF you are LADA and your own insulin production is coming to an end you must have medical care. If you can’t or won’t go to a different A&E seek urgent help from a dr somewhere before it becomes a life and death situation. You need those additional tests.

In the meantime don’t just cut out the sugar but also the other carbs need drastically reducing. Bread, rice, pasta, potatoes, flour, cereals, beer, fruit juice. Has nothing else change since the sudden rise? Diet stress illness? Is there any other medical issue that might be causing this? No need to discuss what on here if you don’t want to, but have a think about what all the potential triggers might be and if you can do anything about them. It might well be nothing you have or haven’t done though if it is LADA
