my fasting level this morning was 5.2. After a bowl of special K for breakfast (this was all I could find) 1 1/2 hours later my level was 7.5. Lunch was half a peperroni pizza and peanut butter cookie with a hershey kiss (lunch at a friend's) 1 1/2 hours later my level was 6.3.

what should I make of these levels?

Difficult to answer unless you provide more info. Do you inject ? Any meds ? Your post pizza reading is very good. Most diabetics would see a higher reading I'm sure.

Think you are a bit like me and don't really know what to make of BG levels. I got a bit paranoid about it and did not test for a couple of days. I did one today at lunch time had home made vegetable soup which included lentils and chick peas and two oat biscuits with cottage cheese. Level before was 5.2 after two hours 5.8 Other times I thought if I had the same things that I had eaten before my BG levels would be more or less the same but it seems not because every time I test they are different

mo I am prediabetic, no medication. I am being retested in January so aiming to get my result down along with my weight and cholesterol.

maybird I am still trying to work out what I can eat and what is out but not sure at what bs level I don't eat.

will see what tea brings!!

It is the carbs that confuse me I have not got a clue how many a day I should be having.I bought the Carbs & Cals book which tells you how many there are in foods but that still does not tell me how many I need

maybird is that the collins book?

what should I be looking at as a 'good' bs 2 hours after a meal? will that tell me what I can and cannot eat or should I be counting the carbs?

sorry...I have another question

I am even more confused. Before tea my bs was 5,6. I had grilled salmon and chips to see what my bs would be. 1 1/2 hours after my bs was 4.6. would the carbs in the chips not make my bs spike? is 1 1/2 hours too soon to test?

Hi everyone, I am finding this pre-diabetic diagnoses confusing, after the fasting HBa1c test showed I was in the pre diabetic range (44) I asked if I should buy a glucometer to check if I am on the right track with my new low GI diet. I was told no, not to worry, but I am concerned. How will I know if I get the balance right. Apart from having reactive hypoglycaemia sometimes, (Due to see specialist end of year. ) I have no other symptoms. Best wishes to you all

Buying a meter was (IMHO) the best thing I ever did. In trying to work out what diet is best for me, I'd feel totally in the dark without it and it also helps you track progress when you are getting it right.

I have also started using myfirnesspal and that really helps for seeing how many carbs are in the food and which ones have 0 carbs.

Not really, 2 hours is post meal but testing at 30 mins and 1 hour as well as 1h30 gives you the full picture while you're learning.

hi im sorry but there isnt a set amount, we all have different tolerances, some people need to keep the carbs to 30 a day to maintain good bg levels where as some may have good reading at say 150g a day, only testing can answer that question for you im afraid

fat slows down the breakdown of carbs so your bg may spike later with a fatty meal, i used to test every half hour until it dropped when trying to learn about my bg readings (sore fingers :) )

totally agree, a meter is essential, its criminally short sighted to tell us not to test, its like saying now close your eyes and be careful what you eat
