Can anybody explain why the blood pressure range appears to have lowered. When I was diagnosed in 2015 I was told my pressure should be 130/80 or thereabouts. Now I have been told that it should be under 120/60. When did this change? Who decided on this change? In 'The Great Cholesterol Con' Dr Kendrick says he was in the House of Commons and two Pharma reps behind him were asking each other 'what should we tell Ministers that blood pressure should be'

"Since 2017, the American Heart Association (AHA) has advised that high blood pressure should be treated at 130/80 rather than 140/90."

So that's when they changed..
140/90 is considered as the very top end of pre-hypertension these days and treatment is recommended.
Pre hypertension starts at 120/80 allegedly.

Anything under that is "normal"

According to this article apologies for the source but it is relatively recent most of the UK is pre hypertensive

Downturn in hypertension drug profits perhaps.. maybe that's me being too cynical..

Yes, it came from the USA and everyone follows like sheep. It will be 110/50 within a few years and we will all be on BP tablets from birth. The numbers are just plucked from thin air and not based on good science. BP level depends greatly on age and because it increases as you get older doesn't mean that it needs to be moved down to 120/60.

3 weeks ago at my hospital for my diabetes appointment my BP was high, 150/ ?? the nurse took it first then my doctor, so I had a BP review at my surgery today and it was 101/66, so that is more in my range.

Seeing as Blood Pressure varies during the day and during active/sedentry times, I'm not sure a one-off reading at the surgery is a good time to take it, to be honest.

I have my own BP monitor and from time to time I take it several times a day. I have done this today, coincidentally. It has ranged from 106/66 (lowest) to 131/71 (highest), average 118/68, all taken sedentary. Just like blood glucose and cholesterol, it varies from minute to minute. As for BP taken at the surgery, my GP told me she mentally knocks 10 off the top number to take account of white coat syndrome, stress and anxiety whilst in the surgery.

At my surgery they could reduce everyone's blood pressure by simply having more parking spaces.

The only parking spaces at my surgery (which is in a busy health centre) are reserved for the doctors and other staff. We insignificant patients have to use a public car park across the road, and pay for the pleasure. The blood pressure rises when struggling to find a space, realising the bays are a bit narrow and too close together, deciding whether an hour will be enough, then running across to the surgery, booking in, and rushing up 2 flights of stairs or taking the lift that may break down. They do have a large tank of fish to watch, supposedly to calm us down.

I did another small experiment earlier. At 11-32am I was 142/91 (eek) and at 11-33am I was 129/79. So, a massive drop in a minute. Of course, my monitor could be faulty!

In March 2012 my blood pressure was recorded at 199/112 :hungover:

Fortunately it is now a lot lower.

My firness bracelet tracks my BP throughout the day at the moment it is registering 112/75 not highly accurate but gives me a general guide as to what is going on as is not too far off from my upper arm cuff BP monitor readings.

@bulkbiker
My thoughts exactly. More profit for Pharma. I've stopped my Losartan, GP knows. I feel fine so far, fingers crossed.
I take losartan I also take Co-trimoxazole I have seriously been cosidering discontinuing the Losartan since reading this.

Mind you I am well past the seeming seven day dead line now.

BTW I hope you tapered it down as if you stop suddenly you can get some bad problems. Or so I have been told.

How does a fitness bracelet measure your blood pressure?

Not sure has to do with surface pressure differentials at wrist I think though omron are bringing one out soon with an actual wrist cuff type bp monitor built in. Or already have.

So by how far do you differ throughout the day while sedentary?

I can see how the one in the video would work as it has a pump to restrict blood flow but a fitness bracelet, I have no idea how that could work.
