Blood pressure

I Do not normally have High BP ,,Only when the Gas Bill comes

http://www.patient.co.uk/health/Diabetes-and-High-Blood-Pressure.htm

Diabetic nephropathy is a complication which develops in some people with diabetes. In this condition the kidneys are damaged, which can cause high blood pressure.

The pressure in the blood vessels depends on how hard the heart pumps, and how much resistance there is in the arteries. It is thought that slight narrowing of the arteries increases the resistance to blood flow, which increases the blood pressure. The cause of the slight narrowing of the arteries is not clear. Various factors probably contribute.

Hi Sarah
Poor BG control is probably the main reason, as it affects all parts of the body including the blood vessels and heart. Unfortunately more type-2s are affected with high BP as for some strange reason the medical profession discourage type-2s from monitoring their own condition, unlike like type-1s. Type-2 patients are rarely prescibed blood test strips and are usually only offered an Hba1c test as a means of monitoring, which as we know only gives an average; meaning BG levels can be swinging low to high and still giving a result within the "acceptable" range. This puzzles me as the results of high BG levels & swinging BG levels will cause the same problems whether you're type 1 or 2 surely??
Do you have blood pressure problems?

Hi Sarah,

A lot of Type 2 's have what is called Metabolic Syndrome prior to diagnosis. This is also evident in people of normal body weight as not all Type 2's are overweight at diagnosis.
The Metabolic Syndrome includes,
1...Insulin resistance.
2...Hypertension, (High BP)
3...High cholesterol especially triglycerides.
4...Increased risk of blood clots.
These are all risks for cardiovascular disease.

A lot of the general population also suffer with Hypertension. There are no symptoms and it is usually only spotted when Dr's decide to test it during a check up or if you ask advice about an ailment.

I have always had high blood pressure when ever it was taken throughout my life pre diabetes it was always commented on but no action was ever taken. As soon as I was diagnosed as diabetic everything changed and I was put on three different bp drugs plus aspirin which I take dissolved in a glass of water. My bp is now better than it has ever been :D
