Type 2 Blood Sugar Levels - Guidance Needed

Hello

I’m fairly new diagnosis of type 2 diabetes of 5-6 months.

I have been testing my blood sugars 4 x a day, before all meals and bedtime.

My sugar levels start at around 20mmol/L on my first reading and by lunchtime it is plus 30mmol/L.

My most recent readings is 32mmol/L and 30.8mmol/L this has been consistent for the last week, I feel fine but I called the GP to let them know as people advised that my sugar levels being that high isn’t normal. The GP doesn’t seem to bothered and said it was fine as I wasn’t feeling poorly with it.

I believe the medication I’m on isn’t working, please advise.

Yes, those readings are sky high to be frank and your GP is talking rubbish. You can feel perfectly fine at those levels (I did) and yet I was on the verge of going into DKA (which although classed as rare, is still possible as a type 2). I'm guessing you have no means of testing your ketone levels? To be honest, sitting there at those levels for a week is dangerous, I would be calling the NHS helpline. I see you are young, how did you come to be diagnosed as type 2 if you don't mind me asking? x
 
Yeah I’m going to wait until Thursday as that’s the only day the diabetes nurse is in and speak to her and see what she can suggest as I feel uncomfortable at this high sugar level.

I have regular blood tests due to mental health illness and it come up on one of them tests in February this year and got diagnosed which come as complete shock to me.
 
Those levels are very high especially if you are on a low carb diet. If you don’t mind me asking are you overweight? Has your GP done any tests to confirm you are type 2 and not type 1?

I would call 111 now and chat to them to see what they recommend. It seems too long to wait until Thursday at that level.

I have to agree with @Lakeslover .
Those levels aren't fine, even if you don't feel poorly with them, and thursday is a long time away. I second calling 111 for advice.

Thirded, those levels are not good and prolonged are worse. I’d call 111 and get advice and get checked out
 
And what exactly are you eating.? Sometimes a low carb diet isn't as low carb as it needs to be

Hello,

High BGs can affect your mental health? I Avocate phoning 111 for medical advice just regarding your BG readings alone.
If you have no way of testing ketones 111 will dispatch an ambulance. You are causing no trouble.
 
This is my first post on this forum but this post forced me to reply. Your GP is dangerously wrong and I’m frankly shocked he would say your readings are ok. If you carry on with blood sugars that high you will definitely get serious complications including amputation, loss of sight, kidney damage. But you can sort it. It takes years usually to do damage so change GPS and or see a consultant and get your medication reviewed. It’s not too late so don’t panic but you do need to do something.

I also agree with another post that you need to be tested to see if you are type 1 rather than type 2. I’ve been type 1 for 26 years, it’s controllable so again don’t panic.

They are high to my thinking, but I eat a low carb diet to keep my numbers down.

i went to doctor one month ago with urinary problems. they checked for infections,etc and said my blood sugar was 389,so the doctor diagnosed me with diabetes. finally obtained a blood sugar meter and strips and was very high for awhile ,because i refused to take metformin . it made me sick. So i bought some gymnema and alpha lipoic acid tablets . started dropping the sugar on the meter,but then i noticed i was getting too low. so i cut the suppliments out,started laying on the garlic and cutting out everything sweet i love. blood sugar for past 3 to 4 days now has been in 120,115,95,etc. without meds etc. still feel like im in a fog but maybe due to my body withdrawl of sugar?cut my coffee out,my sodas,cookies etc. today it felt like it was low and it was,so i took a spoonfull of honey. that did then trick./ Im also eating something sweet before i go to bed. Is this normal for body to have these swings? looking for help and seen you are not taking meds also. If this is happening without meds ,do you think my doctor is wrong on my diabetes or just need to eat low carbs more?

My doctor just sent in a prescription for metformin 1000mg and said to take 1/2 tablet a day for a week then whole tablet forever. no special tests for if im dibetic,having any other problems except 4 viles of blood out of me to check liver functions,etc. they also did an enhanced ct since i was complaining of pain in belyy area and bloated. Now pain almost gone but ct scan showed divertculosis with diveticulitis. My stomach has lost alot of weight .I went from 239 to 199 in about 3 months.kind of slowed down now.when i feel like my mucles are tired,or am sluggish i take my blood sugar. without the meds and herbs, and getting somewhat good numbers am i really a diabetic or is my body detoxing from 50 years of heavy sugar eating?By the way i started having this problem after i had to have my gallbladder out in sept2019. Im watching what i eat now like a hawk. any help or suggestions would help. would have went to dietition here in the usa but they wanted $40 dollars upfront before they would see me. OH well.

You should not need to be looking for supplements or herbal remedies - diabetes is the inability to deal with carbohydrate, so if you are eating low carb then that ought to deal with it as ling as you are an ordinary type two.
Dr Atkins had a lot of useful advice in the last edition of New Diet Revolution. You might need to be careful about the fat content of food as you have no gall bladder.
There is no real need to take Metformin for ever - it is usual for it to be prescribed as a knee jerk reaction, but if you have problems with your gut - I thought that was one of the counter signs for taking it. It is quite some time since I threw out the tablets I was prescribed, so I think that you ought to have a look at the leaflet which should be in with the pills and then speak to your GP about it.
I had horrendous problems taking Metformin, but some people can take it with no problem, so it is just down to luck.
If you have had high levels for a long time then you might feel rather washed out getting down to normal numbers. The modern diet is so high in carbs, many people feel a lot better eating low carb, even if they are not diabetic. I certainly did all my adult life, but was always pushed to eat 'healthy' carbs and ended up type two diabetic.
