blood sugar testing equipment took off me

I am outraged that when i went to my doctors about getting more test strips and they said that i don't need them as i am only type 2 and then they took my test kit away from me, but said that i can give you a prescription for the metformin and then they referred me to a diabetic nurse even though they know that i already have one at a hospital
 
hi my names paul and im in my 2nd week on metformin .im still trying to come to get over the shock of haveing been told that ive got diabetes type 2.my nurse has told me that i dont need a blood testing kit so i went to boot and bought one and was told not to use it by my nurse WHY .im reading a book at the mo called THE 1ST YEAR TYPE 2 DIABETES BY GRETCHEN BECKER. and it says at the start of the book you have to check your glucose ??????
 
Paul, IMHO you need that blood testing kit, but I would not buy it from Boots, most manufacturers will GIVE you one!
You NEED the tester so that you can srr the effects of your diet has on your BG and hence help control your diabetes.
If the nurse/GP tries to tell you that the HbA1c does this, then ask them why a car has a speedometer when the odometer would do :shock:
you need to be able to see "spot" BG levels to find peaks/troughs in your BG due to diet/exercise/drugs.

the "diabetic nurse" at your surgery is probably just a general nurse, detailed to take the pressur off the GPs in having to treat patients :twisted: I would insist on deferring to your hospital DN.
 
This rubbish that comes out if some health care professionals' mouth really gets me angry! How are you supposed to know what foods make your sugar levels go up if you rely on a 3-monthly average test instead of an immediate result from a meter?

Definitely get yourself a meter. Use it to figure out what you can and can't eat.

People's lives are at stake. They give such dangerous advice.
 
My diabetic nurse laughed when I said I would like a blood testing kit - although she was keen enough to increase my medication and threaten me with insulin (I am type 2). It is only through using my blood testing kit that I have decreased my Hba1c to 5.6 from over 9 - by discovering what gives me high blood sugar and what doesn't.

I won't tell the dr or nurse that I use this equipment as they won't approve and it is a fight I can do without. This is the same diabetic nurse who told me to eat as much fruit as I wanted and carbohydrate in the form of potato, pasta or bread at every meal and because of this my Hba1c continued to rise.

Nor will I tell her about the diet I follow or my supplements!

So, I suggest you continue testing - we need to know what is going on with our sugars on a daily basis - that's the only way we can stay in control - or so it seems to me!

False analogy. Because the driver is too slow to calculate speed from the odometer readings - both ultimately measure the same thing (driveshaft rotational speed).
 
its easy if they say to me don't test i'll say tough i have one i got myself and i will test they cabn't take it off me..

I have to;d me DN and she said well you don't really need to test and when i said how do i know what effects me the most then? she agreed with what i was saying.. but give me the party line about getting low readings and thinking i can eat something sugary.. i said no i want to keep my levels down so i don;t get complications... soemtimes i think the want you to fail
 
I'm type 2 and I test a couple of times a day. As some posts say, most manufacturer's will give you a tester - because they want you to buy or (if you're lucky be prescribed) their test strips. At my last diabetic review I was told that I was doing really well in getting my BG levels down and she would see me in a year. She also gave me a target of keeping my BG below 6.5 which is fine as it's normally around 5 -5.5 but I wouldn't know what my levels were unless I tested so it's a bit of a going round in circles excercise. I can only suggest that you get a free test kit and I buy my test strips from e bay - probably from someone who gets them prescribed for free but can't be bothered to use them. Ho Hum! :D
 
thanks all for that advice my uncle has the same as me and he was the one who said to use one.the other thing the nurse has said was ive got to cut right down on bread patatoes rice paster .im 19 stone i cant live on veg .I also asked about meat and was told only a small amount .WHAT CAN I EAT to fill me up.can anyone advise please

If you cut right back on rice potatoes and pasta, you probably won't be 19 stones for long. And Yes! you can live on vegetables. Vegetarians do. [I'm not one!]
I eat meat, fish, cheese, eggs and vgetables. LOTS of vegetables.
For lunch today, I had a huge portion of steamed Brussells Sprouts and 3 rashers of crispy bacon. Delicious! for dinner a portion of my "Quiche .. ish". I've also had my usual daily square of chocolate today.

What do they no!!!!!doctors drive me nuts i really haven't got any faith in them at all, also the nurses are just as bad, and don't even get me started on the dieticians I have seen a few and they wasn't any help at all. Just take notice of the advice you get on here.

What a bloody nerve the doctor has taking your things off you!

Test meters - essential - how on earth do you know what and how much food affects you if you dont test. Some of these doctors are clowns and the nurses are mostly not trained - just allocated the task of being the diabetic nurse in the surgery.

My DSN told me I should immediately stop taking any sugar whatsoever, stop taking any alcohol immediately, eat plenty of carbohydrates with each meal, inform the DVLA immediately and then get my eyes tested. She had not got a clue. Fortunately I found some good books which put me right, found the many sites on the internet, like this, that are full of people who really know what its all about.

Test meters - essential for peace of mind - if you cant get one free get a Codefree. Its cheap to buy and the test strips are the cheapest on the market, then keep testing.
 
Thanks everyone for all the advice.im on a weeks holiday from work and im going to town shopping with my sister then home and put on my walking boots and hit the north downs for a walk and fresh air. :D
