he everyone
Iv have been diagnosed for 2 month and managed to loose 1 1/2 stone my diabetic nurse is re testing my hba1c again already as she thinks my blood sugars are really well controlled and wants me off metformin (100mg a day ) asap. She recommended a low carb 1200 cal a day diet and I have done well on that. I have found tho my blood sugars are strange, I had a white tortilla wrap and some birthday cake of my daughters on her birthday and it was 7.8 at 1 hr 7.3 at 2 hr and 5.1 at 3 hrs yet I have had a small roasted sweet potato tonight for tea and it’s 7.8 at 2 hr. is this normal blood sugar behaviour. Also for some reason dark chocolate ( only one I eat so only one tested ) doesn’t impact my blood sugar much at all. Also if my blood sugar drops below 5 I start to feel shaky and weak and it’s like I know I need to eat something sweet and as soon as I have a bit of something I feel better is this normal also, blood sugars are so confusing to me I’m not even sure what I should be aiming for post meal, I know it’s below 8.5 but that seems quite high to me as I was told anything above 7 can cause organ damage.

I made the mistake of roasting sweet potato. I tried it in a stew first and it was absolutely fine.

I roasted a few to try and replace roast potatoes. I had three small ones and my readings went through the roof!

So they are fine boiled, but bake or roast them and they turn into sugar devils.

Thank you, I will avoid roasting them from now on. I think I just assumed if my bg could handle a tortilla and cake a sweet potatoe would be fine but obviously not. I Will try them boiled or in a stew at some point. Thanks again

You'll probably get more stable results if you eat low carb foods - small amounts of high carbs can be problematic - they seem to throw my metabolism into a wobbly, going high and then dropping rapidly. It is the rapid drop which gives the impression of a hypo.
Wraps, cake and sweet potato would all cause me problems if I ever decided that they seemed like a good idea

That makes a lot of sense, in all honesty iv been really low carb since I was diagnosed and my numbers have been great it’s just been my daughters birthday and tonight I have had had anything high carb, im usually chicken and salad for dinner and fish and low carb vegetables for tea. I’ll stay away away now, I was going to allow myself a treat at special occasions but the numbers just don’t seem worth it.
