Hi All,

I wanted some advise, my blood test yearly (Past around 8 years) has been around 41 for blood sugars but this year came back at 48 which means diabetes, i have a re-test in 3 months and want to lower the 48 back to 41 or lower to avoid the diabetes.

little about me. asian 45 yrs old , 5 foot 2, weight is 96 kgs (over weight) and vegetarian. normally am little active but past year haven't been so put on weight 10 kgs maybe (as new office job)

i am thinking of doing the 20:4 fast to tackle two things 1 diabetes and second weight which i guess helps with diabetes, whats others view on this?

or what would you recommend.

thanks

Hi and welcome. When diagnosed, my HbA1c was around where yours is now. Mine had been steadily increasing for around ten years and I'd been having diabetic symptoms from around 2009. I was eating the standard recommended "healthy" Eatwell Plate at the time.

Because of information from this forum, previous advice from a number of doctors, and good experience of Atkins in the past, I switched to a very low carb diet in December 2019. By April 2020 my HbA1c was 36 and it has stayed in normal range since. I lost a little bit of weight to begin with in the first year but by 2021-3 weight loss totalled around 40 kilo. I couldn't go on losing that amount and have marginally increased carb intake since which has both stabilised weight and maintained my BG level. There have been no unwanted consequences whatsoever.

I don't fast by design but as I only eat when hungry fasting happens sort of normally. For instance, I've not eaten since around 7pm last night which is going to be a fast of around 17 or 18 hours (likely to eat something in the next hour or so). I did try the 5:2 system around ten years ago and couldn't deal with it - the hunger was too much to cope with.

As you're vegetarian, you're not going to be eating what I eat - which was and is largely based on meat, fish, and dairy. Elsewhere on this forum there are threads for "vegetarian low-carb" and I'd encourage you to have a look at those.

Best of luck

Even small daily changes can make a difference. Things like cutting out sugary drinks, moving more (even a 30-minute walk after meals), and swapping processed carbs for whole foods can help bring numbers down. Since you’re vegetarian, focus on high-protein foods like lentils, beans, tofu, plus plenty of veggies. Weight loss, even a few kilos, usually helps blood sugar a lot. Fasting works for some, but consistency with diet and activity is usually easier to stick with long term.
