Just a suggestion....
How about posting books anyone have found useful in making life easier for us diabetic newbies?
The collins gem carb counter book is a favourite from what i have seen so far so number 1 is
COLLINS GEM CARB COUNTER
if we all put the titles in capitals they may not get lost in the comments, so what is your fav lifestle book??? could be diet, exercise, body n mind or recipes etc...your choice

Hi

The little Gem is useful for its size but I am not sure about all the data being accurate - some is american. It is poorly referenced!

The carb and fat Bible is better and bigger and produced by qualified dietitians / nutritionists!

A new book carbs and cals .com is great as it has pics and is put in portion and handy sizes!
This is produced by a specialist diabetes dietitian.

One of my favourites which gets used a lot is the Calorie Carb and Fat Bible 2010, as Ally says the Little Gem is poorly referenced and some of the data is not correct. When we have challenged them about it they don't even bother to answer. A reasonable pocket sized reference but that's about it. I have it and others in the series but certainly wouldn't put it at No.1. Just my opinion.

The Low GL Diet Bible by Patrick Holford is good if you ignore his comments and concentrate on the basics about GI and GL. A decent starter which helps if you want to go down another diet route.

Diabetes for Dummies is another good one although most of the references are American so some of the things quoted are not what we adhere to in the UK.

BTW, capitals is considered 'shouting' so that why it isn't much used on a Forum. We do use it for Topic headings for various subjects to denote importance and make it stand out.

Oops forgot about the shouting thing, just thought it would help pick out titles, will have to be more careful on posts.

Hi Ally.
I wasn't going to say anything about Holford.....I only get 'stick' for mentioning it. You have just said what I actually think about him.....am I allowed to say that.....

However his book did get me started on GI/GL so I have to put it as one I like. (with reservations).
I'll look out for the other one.......Book's are my passion. Well, one of them anyway ! :D

Hi Ken

Patrick is very deluded - no qualifications in nutrition except the ones he made up himself!!

the picture book is really good - there are samples on the website1

I will use it with diabetics and my sports people1

Ally.
Yes....I have seen most of the stuff about him and am in total agreement with you on this one. As you say made up qualifications and stuff.........how do they manage to get away with it for so long ?

Wales......no rain.....you're pulling my leg again !
Anyway I thought you were off to sunnier climes or is that later ?

Ken

I am off to france in 2 weeks but we went to Newport in pembroke - what a fab place . The weather was luvly! Wales is very sunny these days - no joke!

Been to that area a few times and always had a great time....funnily enough the weather wasn't really that bad. It just always seemed to be raining when the kids were bored !!

Well, hope you enjoy the tour round France.......fabulous countryside, roads, towns and villages, love the place, the people, the food, the wine....I think you might get the idea that I like it........ :D

I'm drooling already.

Ken.
