hi all.
My GP has just told me my blood sugar level is 7.5, taken fasting at 9.15 am He has referred me to a Diabetic Control Nurse but my appointment is 3 weeks away, he told me not to worry but I feel awful each morning I waken with a fast heart beat, feeling confused and Nauseous , but miday I start to feel better, my eyesight is poor and blurry at times, and by bedtime I feel not too bad, is this to do with blood sugar or something else.
I don't take much sugary food, no sugar in tea or coffee, no sugar on cereal, Like the odd choc biscuit, but cannot stop eating sweets if I start a packet i have to finish it, I drink a lot during the day but only diet drinks, I don't know if I have diabetis but my doctor said I was Borderline and reading info on the net a lot of people say there is no such thing as Borderline. Hope you understand what i am on about and if you can give me any help i would be grateful

Hi,

Sorry to hear about your diagnosis. I'm a Type 2 diagnosed nine years ago but without any complications that I am aware of. Also, I've reversed my situation over the last twelve months.

You will already know that you need to steer clear of sugar. However, you may not know about the problems that starchy carbohydrates can cause you - i.e. cereals, bread, potatoes, rice and pasta. In fact, the healthcare professionals may tell you to eat more of those foods - they often do! You really ought to cut back on your intake of the starchy carbohydrates also if you want to get control of your blood glucose levels - oterwise your condition is likely to progress - i.e. deteriorate.

If you have any questions then just ask. You'll get loads of advice from people on these diabetes forums.

Best wishes - John

Thanks John for your reply, can you tell me is 7.5 bad or not too bad i didn't ask my GP, and I was wondering if it was high.

hi,
7.5 is higher than normal if it was fasting, saying that it could be a lot worse and as long as you start sorting yourself out you can get it lower,
keep asking the questions :D

David
If what you want to know is "Is this blood glucose a long way from normal?" It is high
A non diabetic will have a blood glucose around and probably below 5 at all times, except in the first couple of hours after a high carbohydrate meal. Even then a non-diabetic would rarely get up to 7.5. You can help to get this down by eating fewer carbs, firstly sugars and also starches.

In diabetic terms it isn't dramatic. Some diabetics do end up with VERY high numbers, if they get things wrong.
However very high numbers would make anyone feel pretty ill.

Hi again David,

A fasting level of just over 7 was where I started with nine years ago. It would sound to be the early stages of diabetes - it was for me anyway. It took me eight years to get to understand what it all meant and what to do. In fact, I was following bad advice for those eight years. I wish that I'd found my way to these diabetes forums as quickly as you have. Follow the advice you get from people here and you won't go far wrong.

Diet is your most powerful tool! In particular being careful with your intake of carbohydrates.

Starting to test would be a good idea too!

Best wishes - John

Thanks folks for the advice I will follow your diet ideas and see how I get on, will let you know what the Practice Nurse recommends
