Type 1 Boyfriend with Diabetes 1

Hi everyone,

As in the title, my boyfriend has Diabetes 1 since he was 16 (now 28) years old.

We live together and I want to help him to lower his average blood sugar level (sorry I am not native speaker and I dont know what is the proper name for it...).

At the last check with his doctos, the average was 8.5, previously 8.9...
I know that a good value should be around 6, and this makes me really worry.

I would like to ask:
Can it be "normal" for someone with diabetes to have such a high value / can it happens often to have times where this average value can end up being this high?
or,
Is it an absolut sign that he is not taking the right care of his diabetes, since it normally never happens to other people with diabetes to have it this high?
And also:
Can this put him in big danger for his healt, also if the average stay high for a short period of time (few months)?

Thank you very much to everyone who will share with me his experience about it.

He is very lucky to have a caring partner....who is interested. I would suggest you make a joint New Years resolution to drop his numbers by say 1.5. If he agrees then both of you research together what he can do to achieve this (and or just ask). The choices will then naturally flow e.g. if he likes ice cream perhaps swap his favourite for Oppo etc.

Managing diabetes is something the person with diabetes needs to do. But it is wonderful you are there to help your boyfriend.
His average BG is a bit higher than usually recommended and increases the chances of complications in future life.
As @Mbaker suggests, there are multiple ways to lower his BG but basically this is about matching his insulin to his carbs. Eating less carbs is one way but so is exercise and insulin timing. The key thing is test test test to understand what is affecting his BG.
I like @Mbaker idea to make it a New Year resolution. In the meantime, enjoy Christmas and try not to add extra pressure.

Hi @Fra.ta ,

Welcome to the forum.

Can we ask what insulin regime your boyfriend is prescribed.?

Hi. Yes, do let us know what insulin your boyfriend uses and whether he adjusts the meal-time insulin to match the carbs in the meal (called carb-counting). When you mention average blood sugar are you using an average of his meter readings or using the results of his last HBA1C blood test which provides a slightly different average figure.
