well this sucks not got to eat or eat in moderation
i like all of the above, what am i supposed to eat with my meals. i do eat veg and salad but i like bread and pasta

it must be dependent on were you live in the UK and your doctor as to whether he will give you a BG meter and test strips
the meters are cheap enough but the test strips are stupidly priced. i see loads of posts regarding newly diagnosed people
with Type 2 been advised to use one.but the man who looks after my health will not issue one.the man is a well there is a word
for him but i wont use it in polite company and been on a very low income its not viable to purchase one.. what else gets me
is the overweight heath care professionals telling me i should loose weight stop drinking an exercise more than i do,
seems they should practice what they preach.sorry if sounds like a rant but i am well peved off with it all four months or so into
been diagnosed and dont feel any better than i did in fact i feel worst, no energy not sleeping hot sweats on a night so you go to the docs an
he just does jack getting to the point were im going to change docs but friends who have different docs to me are having the same problems
i take Metformin 500mg with or before a meal 3 x a day an other meds

i will shut up now i need a drink a large V,a,T

Well Riffraff, you just about got it in one, but what are you going to do about it? We all love bread, spuds, rice, pasta etc but eating them will make us fatter and liable to diabetic complications amongst other things, so we do our best to either avoid them or seriously reduce the amounts we eat. It's up to you. I appreciate a lot of NHS staff have no idea when it comes to helping diabetics, so we have to help ourselves. Simples.

Have you looked on Amazon for the Codefree meter and strips? Seems to be the cheapest and reasonable.

HI and welcome. You can buy cheap strips on eBay. Some are ex-prescription so check the use-by date and you have to take a view on the morals of ex-prescription stuff, but as a diabetic.......

Ok, you need to get a monitor but do it on line. If you go to www.homehealth-uk.com directly (also got shop on ebay) you can order an sd codefree meter for £13.92. This will include monitor, case, 10 lancets and 10 strips. In addition you can order 5 boxes of 50 strips for £26 instead of £35 if you use promo code 264086. These strips cost even less if you buy 10 packs promo code 975833. Meter has had mixed reviews but I have no probs. 5 boxes will last you 3-5 months depending on how often to test. If you pay 50p extra you get them within 1-2 days. Understand the low budget thing. Hubbie only got part time work which goes virtually all on child care so my money has to pay everything. Once you have the meter, it's £6.99 for strips a month or £26 for 5 months.
The diet: I would low carb it. When I first came here @Totto suggested looking at dietdoctor- just as she has to you. It was a life saver. I've lost 2 stone 5lbs and halved my blood sugar levels. I was 16 stone 1lb. Brekkie: fry up minus bread or hash brown. Lunch: full fat Greek yoghurt and berries or think tapas. Evening meal:meat or fish with veg or salad. You can make a quiche but don't use a pastry case. Trust me it works. Have a low carb pudding twice a week and 2 squares of dark choccie every night. Check out Scandis recipes. My strawberry ice cream is to die for! Do you have a Lidl nearby? I go there first and only go to the well known supermarkets to fill in any gaps. Very cheap! Good luck!
